Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Frederick, MD (April 17, 2011) - David Mailman's solo home run snapped a 5-5 tie in extra innings in the opener, and Chris Balcom-Miller dominated the Frederick lineup in the nightcap to help Salem swipe a pair of ballgames on getaway day in Maryland. The Sox prevailed 6-5 in eight innings in the opener and routed the Keys 8-1 in the finale, Salem's sixth win in its last seven games.
Salem jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener thanks to a four-run top of the fifth, but the Keys retaliated with a five-spot in the bottom-half of the inning to even the score. Although Frederick had at least one runner in scoring position in seven of the eight innings in the game, the Keys only scored runs in one frame as Salem pitchers made numerous crucial pitches to escape jams.
Mailman went 2-4 in the game with an RBI double and the game-changing homer off Keys reliever Dan Klein. Reynaldo Rodriguez and Derrik Gibson also had multiple hits as the Sox set a season high in both runs (6) and hits (10).
In the second game, Salem exceeded their run total from the opener by scoring early and often against Keys starter Bobby Bundy. Jeremy Hazelbaker swiped home on a wild pitch in the first inning, and a pair of doubles from Mailman and Shannon Wilkerson in the second inning helped the Sox make it 3-zip. In the fourth, the Keys defense aided Salem's cause, contributing three infield errors to Salem's two-run rally.
Up 5-0 after three and a half, Salem starter Chris Balcom-Miller grooved toward his second straight victory, authoring five shutout innings for the second time this season. Balcom-Miller allowed just one hit in his five frames, a single to leadoff batter Kyle Hudson in the first inning. In relief, Anatanaer Batista held the fort in the final two innings, permitting one run to cross the plate in the seventh, spoiling the shutout. Frederick's run off Batista was the first run scored against the Salem bullpen this season, a collective total of 30.2 IP.
Wilkerson was the only Red Sock with multiple hits in the nightcap, while Kolbrin Vitek blasted a two-run triple in the top of the seventh to make it 7-0. Vitek scored a pitch later when Rodriguez' sac fly paved his road home.
With a 6-2 record through eight games, the Salem Sox journey to Lynchburg on Monday for game one of a three-game, two-city series with the Hillcats. Ryan Pressly shall duel with Willie Kempf in the opener on Monday, a 6:05 first pitch at City Stadium.
