Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. ¬" The Stockton Thunder, a two-time recipient of the ECHL "Award of Excellence," announced an event record 1,242 coats were donated at Stockton Arena for the team's annual "Coats for Kids" drive, presented by News10, AAA and KAT Country 103, before the Thunder game on Sunday against the Victoria Salmon Kings at 4:00 p.m.
Fans who brought a new or gently-used coat to the game received a free ticket voucher to the game, helping the Thunder draw over 14,000 fans for back-to-back games on Saturday vs. Idaho and Sunday vs. Victoria.
"As an organization the Thunder is happy to partner with News10, AAA and KAT Country and our generous fans to make this program successful, year after year," said Thunder vice president of marketing Marlena Aranda. "We were thrilled to have had such an overwhelming response to our 'Coats for Kids' day this season. Fans get to see a Thunder game for free and local children get to stay warm - it's a win/win situation for all involved."
A total of 6,434 fans were in attendance for Sunday's game, placing the Thunder third in ECHL attendance with 54,910 fans through nine games (6,101 average attendance per game).
A traditional event each year before a Sunday home game with the Thunder partnering with KXTV-TV News10, all coats collected are donated through the Salvation Army to underprivileged children during the winter season. Last year, over 600 coats were collected for the cause.
The Thunder has helped collect and donate a total of over 5,600 coats during the winter season, since the event began in 2005-06.
A proud affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League and the Oklahoma City Barons and Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League, the Thunder was voted "Best Local Sports Team" by readers of the San Joaquin Magazine for the third straight year, led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew over 200,000 fans for the fifth consecutive season in 2009-10. Season tickets, mini-plans and individual tickets are on sale now.
