Calgary Stampeders News Release
Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that non-import running back Jesse Lumsden has signed a practice-roster agreement with the club. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"Jesse has shown that he can be a very productive player in the CFL, so we're happy to have him," said Hufnagel. "He's joining the team on the practice roster to provide valuable depth and we'll see what happens from there."
Lumsden played one game for the Edmonton Eskimos last season - recording two rushes for five yards and three catches for 20 yards - before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury.
"I'm looking forward to getting back on the field," said Lumsden. "I was fortunate enough to have some other opportunities but I feel that the Stampeders are a good fit for me. It allows me to pursue my other career with the Canadian bobsleigh team and I think Calgary is definitely a place I can see myself living after my football career."
The product of McMaster University was originally drafted by Hamilton in the first round (sixth overall) of the CFL Draft. Lumsden played in 30 games over four seasons with the Tiger-Cats and carried the ball 185 times for 1,797 yards and nine touchdowns while adding 49 catches for 630 yards and two scores before joining Edmonton in 2009.
He won the Hec Crighton Trophy as the best player in Canadian university football in 2004 and upon his graduation he was the all-time leading rusher in Ontario conference history.
Hufnagel also announced today that import receiver Jermaine Jackson was released. Jackson joined the club in 2009 ad dressed for eight games with the Red and White.
