Playing their third game in three days, the Portland Winterhawks dropped a 3-2 decision in a shootout to the Spokane Chiefs Sunday in preseason action in Everett, Washington.

It was the Winterhawks who struck first, with Seth Swenson opening the scoring 5:18 into the game with a power play goal. Portland extended the lead to 2-0 just 1:30 later when Luke Walker scored with a two-man advantage.

After a scoreless second period, Spokane got on the board midway through the third period when Levko Koper scored at the 10:15 mark. The Chiefs continued applying pressure throughout the period, firing 18 shots at Winterhawks netminder Keith Hamilton. They broke through again to tie the game with just under three minutes remaining on a power play goal by Anthony Bardaro.

Bardaro's goal forced overtime, with neither team scoring. In the shootout, Bardaro and Blake Gal scored on Spokane's first two attempts, while Ty Rattie got one for Portland in the second round. On the Chiefs' third shootout attempt, Mitch Holmberg got one past Hamilton to seal the win.

Despite the loss, Hamilton had an outstanding game in net for Portland, turning away 45 of 47 shots. The Winterhawks fired 23 shots at Spokane netminder James Reid, who made 21 saves.

The Winterhawks return to action next weekend when they travel to Kennewick for two games, starting with a game against Everett Friday at 11 a.m. followed by a matchup against the Kootenay Ice Saturday at 11 a.m.
