Five Millionth Fan Enters Fifth Third Field on Night Hens Beat Clippers, 6-4

TOLEDO, Ohio - On the night the five millionth fan walked through the turn styles at Fifth Third Field, the Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Columbus Clippers, 6-4, before 10,300 cheering fans.

L.J. Gagnier (7-7) struck out seven and allowed one run on five hits in six superb innings. He walked three.

The Hens took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Mike Bertram tripled to lead off the home half before Ben Guez drove him in with an RBI single. The inning then stalled out.

Columbus tied it in the top of the third when Luke Carlin hit a homer to lead off the frame. However, the Mud Hens answered in the bottom half when Andy Dirks hit a solo home run of his own to put Toledo back in front.

The Hens took a 6-1 lead with four runs in the fifth. Max Leon and Andy Dirks hit back-to-back-singled to lead off the inning before Jeff Frazier stuck out. Bertram followed with an RBI double to give Toledo a 3-1 lead. A Ben Guez sac fly brought Dirks home. Justin Henry followed with Toledo's second RBI double of the inning. The Hens would take a 6-1 lead when Henry scored on a fielding error by Columbus first basemen Jared Goedert. Shaw Roof flied out to end in the inning.

The Clippers came back in the eighth with three runs. Ezequiel Carrera walked to lead off the inning before Cord Phelps and Wes Hodges each recorded outs. A walk to Drew Sutton put two on with two outs. Goedert cleared the bases with a two-RBI single. Jerad Head followed with another RBI double and all of a sudden it was 6-4. Carlin grounded out to end the rally.

Casey Fien pitched the ninth and collected his eighth save of the season.

The Hens and Clippers continue their series Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Thursday.
