BayBears Drop Second Straight, Magic Number Lowers to Four
September 1, 2010 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release
Even with a 7-5 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, the BayBears' magic number to clinch a postseason berth shrunk to four with the Montgomery Biscuits losing earlier in the night at home.
Chattanooga (65-69, 32-33) jumped on the BayBears (71-60, 35-28) in the third as Jaime Pedroza turned a lead-off walk into a run after a single and a fielder's choice off the bat of Dee Gordon.
Will Savage couldn't hang on to the advantage as he was chased in the bottom of the third by the BayBears. Walks to Collin Cowgill and Bryan Byrne loaded the bases after an Ollie Linton single while Konrad Schmidt doubled home Linton and Cowgill. Ryan Wheeler ripped a two-bagger to score Byrne and Schmidt, giving the BayBears a three-run lead.
Chattanooga came roaring back against Kyler Newby (3-3) in the top of the fourth. Kyle Russell smacked a lead-off dinger to make it a 4-2 BayBear lead while the Lookouts loaded the bases on two singles and a walk for relief pitcher David Pfeiffer (7-4). Pfeiffer then ripped a grand slam to deep right-center field, giving the Lookouts a 6-4 advantage.
Russell added another solo shot in the fifth off Josh Ellis to put the Lookouts up by three. Pfeiffer lasted 2.2 innings while giving up no runs on three hits. Cole St. Clair and Javy Guerra also kept the BayBears off the board through eight innings.
Jon Huber (S, 18) picked up the final three outs but not without any issues. Chris Rahl singled and came home on a base hit by Wheeler while a knock by Taylor Harbin filled the bases with one away for Jake Elmore. Elmore laced a grounder to short that Gordon scooped to begin a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Jacksonville and Montgomery both lost on Wednesday which kept the BayBears a game behind the Suns for first place in the South Division with their wild card lead over the Biscuits at two games with just six to play.
The BayBears will take on the Lookouts in their regular season home finale on Thursday night at 7:05. It's a Thirsty Thursday with $1 Buds and Pepsi available between 6 and 8 p.m. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, please call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
