Springfield Cardinals News Release

Tulsa, OK - After a tough 5-1 loss in game one of the four game series with Tulsa on Tuesday night, the Cardinals looked to even the series and distance themselves from Drillers with only six games to play in the regular season.

Both starting pitchers, Greg Reynolds for Tulsa and Scott McGregor for the Cardinals, came out firing strikes on Wednesday as neither team got a run across in the first three innings.

In the 4th, the Cardinals would take their first lead by getting a lead off double by Antone DeJesus followed by an RBI single from Pete Kozma to go up 1-0. After another single and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Daryl Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Kozma to give the Cards' a 2-0 lead.

Scott McGregor ran into some trouble in the bottom of the 4th allowing a two out single, a double then an intentional walk to load the bases, but the right hander got out of the jam unscathed as Greg Reynolds grounded out to shortstop to end the Drillers threat.

Tulsa would finally get on the scoreboard in the 5th as Scott McGregor retired the first two batters, but allowed a solo home run to Bronson Sardinha to bring the Drillers within a run, 2-1. McGregor breezed after that as he retired the final seven batters he faced and finished his outing throwing seven strong innings allowing just the one run on five hits.

Blake King would come in out of the bullpen for the 8th and did not allow a run while striking out two to maintain the 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals added a huge insurance run in the 9th as Xavier Scruggs blasted a solo home run, his 7th with Springfield, with two outs to extend the lead to 3-1.

Adam Reifer came in to close the game out in the 9th and made things interesting with two outs as he walked two batters before allowing a single to Anthony Jackson to load the bases. Charlie Blackmon then came up and flied out to Aaron Luna in left field to end the game with a 3-1 Cardinals win.

Springfield will continue their four game series with the Tulsa Drillers at ONEOK Field on Thursday night. In game three, the Cardinals will send left hander Nick Additon (9-6) to the mound against right hander Jonnathan Aristil (1-1) for the Drillers. Game time is at 7:05pm.

The Cardinals playoffs hopes are still alive and well as they have secured the second best record in the North Division and the only way the Cardinals would not go to the post season is if the Tulsa Drillers win the second half outright. NW Arkansas and the Travelers were postponed due to rain tonight in Springdale to go up 2.5 games up on the Drillers in the division.

Should the Cardinals make the playoffs, they would host games three and four of the best of five game divisional series at Hammons Field on September 10th and 11th.
