Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-Mark Fleury collected a single, double, and triple and Frank Pfister made a key defensive play in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 3-1 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Thursday night. The two clubs have split the first two games of the series. Dayton has won five of its last six games.
Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Dragons reliever Blaine Howell got the first two batters in the South Bend lineup before yielding back-to-back singles. An error allowed runners to reach second and third with two outs. South Bend's Victor Estevez hit a slow roller up the third base line. Pfister charged, fielded, and with no play at first, threw the ball home. Fleury blocked the plate and tagged out Ramon Castillo to end the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Ricky Bowen (4-8) worked the first six innings and was outstanding, allowing three hits and one run with two walks and five strikeouts. Bowen earned the win five days after he beat Lake County on Saturday at Fifth Third Field.
Reliever Jason Braun followed Bowen to the mound and retired six of the seven batters he faced over two scoreless innings. Bowen walked one and struck out two. Howell pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
South Bend took the lead in the second inning when Ramon Castillo scored from third with two outs on an infield single by Victor Estevez to make it 1-0.
The Dragons tied the game in the fourth when Fleury doubled, stole third, and scored on an error to even the score at 1-1.
In the sixth, the Dragons took their first lead of the series. Fleury tripled to right-center field and scored on Cameron Satterwhite's sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. The Dragons added a run in the eighth when Henry Rodriguez doubled to left-center, went to third on Fleury's single to left, and scored on a long sacrifice fly to left by Satterwhite to make it 3-1 and close out the scoring.
The Dragons collected seven hits. Fleury went 3 for 4 and scored two runs. Rodriguez was 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games.
The Dragons (17-41, 47-80) play at South Bend (26-32, 56-70) on Friday to close out the three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Jacob Johnson (7-6, 4.40) will start for Dayton against Mike Belfiore (2-9, 3.81).
