Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Eastlake, OH - Kyle Lobstein kick-started the Hot Rods critical seven-game road trip in high fashion on Wednesday night, hurling seven shutout frames to beat the Lake County Captains 6-2. The victory is the Hot Rods second straight and keeps them in the hunt for one of the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Division.

Early on, Lobstein was matched pitch-for-pitch by the Lake County staff through the early innings of the game until the Hot Rods finally broke through in the fifth against reliever Owen Dew. Cody Rogers led off the frame with a single, quickly followed by a base hit to left by Bennett Davis. Dustin Biell sacrificed both runners an extra 90 feet before Tyler Bortnick drove home Rogers with a single to center field to give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead. Ty Morrison followed with a bunt single to bring home Davis for a 2-0 lead.

An inning later, the Hot Rods added three runs thanks to some sloppy fielding by Lake County. Ryan Wiegand began the frame with a single before Mark Thomas bounced into a fielder's choice for the first out. Julio Cedeno followed with a potential double play grounder to third base. The ball skipped through the third baseman's legs, which put runners at first and second. The next batter, Rogers, followed with another infield grounder, but a second miscue loaded the bases to open the flood gates for Bowling Green.

Bennett Davis brought home the first run of the frame by getting hit in the back with a pitch from reliever Nick Sarianides. After a strikeout of Dustin Biell, Bortnick blooped a single to left to plate two more unearned runs and make it a 5-0 Hot Rods lead.

From there, Lobstein ensured he would earn his eighth victory of the season. He went seven full frames, giving up just four hits. He struck out seven, didn't issue a walk, and held the Captains hitless in six at-bats with runners in scoring position. Seven innings ties his career high, a mark he has reached four times in 2010. He has also racked up 30 strikeouts against just four walks in his last five outings.

The Hot Rods added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth, bumping the score to 6-0 on an RBI single by Ryan Wiegand. It was the first baseman's 61st RBI, moving him within two of the franchise record. In the bottom of the inning Lake County answered with two unearned runs against Alex Koronis to break up the Hot Rods shutout. The runs were the first allowed by Hot Rods pitchers since the third inning on Sunday, a span covering 22 scoreless frames.

Bortnick, playing just minutes from where he grew up, led the way by going 2-5 with three RBI. Morrison and Wiegand each added a pair of hits while driving in a run. Davis finished his night reaching base in all three plate appearances, driving home a run, before leaving the game in the seventh inning.

The two teams continue the series with morning baseball on Thursday beginning at 10:00 AM CDT. RHP Albert Suarez (0-4, 5.16) takes the ball against Lake County's Brett Brach (4-7, 2.86). You can listen to the game with Tom Gauthier beginning at 9:45 AM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
