Silver Hawks Drop Opener at Lansing

August 18, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Lansing, MI - An early 4-0 lead was wiped away quickly as the Lansing Lugnuts scored in five straight innings against the South Bend Silver Hawks on Wednesday night, taking the first game of the series by a 10-5 final count. However, with a West Michigan loss, the Silver Hawks remain 5.5 games out of a playoff spot with 19 games remaining.

South Bend started the scoring in the top of the first when newcomer Chris Jarrett singled in his first at-bat in a Silver Hawks uniform. After stealing second, Jarrett scored on a RBI triple by Bobby Borchering for the 1-0 lead. Borchering later scored on an error to make it 2-0 after a half inning.

The Silver Hawks went back to the well in the second inning, with Jarrett again figuring prominently in the rally. With two on and two outs, Jarrett tripled into the right field corner driving in two runs to push the Silver Hawks out in front 4-0. Jarrett finished 3-for-5 in his Silver Hawks debut with two singles, a triple, and two RBIs.

However, the fun ended after the top of the second, as Lansing scored in their next five at-bats to put the game out of reach. Lansing plated two runs in the second, two more in the third, and one in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead against South Bend starter Andrew Wolcott (LP, 1-3). Kevin Nolan had a two run single in the second, K.C. Hobson had a two run homer in the third to tie the game, and Brad McElroy provided an RBI single in the fourth.

The Lugnuts added two more in the fifth inning with RBIs from Michael Crouse and Sean Ochinko to chase Wolcott from the game. Wolcott would go 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits.

Lansing rounded out the scoring against reliever Brad Gemberling (ND) in the sixth with a two run single from Jake Marisnick and a RBI triple from Nolan to put the game at 10-4.

After the shaky beginning, Lansing starter Egan Smith (WP, 6-2) settled down to turn in five innings for the win. Matt Wright (ND) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings before Brian Slover (ND) allowed a meaningless run in the ninth while still closing out the victory for Lansing.

Ender Inciarte had two hits and two runs scored for South Bend, extending a hitting streak to a personal best five games. Victor Estevez also had two hits to take his streak to a personal high six games.

The series continues with game two Thursday night beginning at 7:05 PM Eastern Time. LHP Tyler Skaggs (8-4, 3.61 ERA with Cedar Rapids) will make his South Bend debut after being acquired by the Diamondbacks via the Dan Haren trade with the Angels. Lansing counters with RHP Dave Sever (5-8, 4.45 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
