
Chiefs Open Series With 5-2 Victory

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs opened a three-game series with the Burlington Bees with a 5-2 win on Wednesday night. The win is the fourth in a row for the Chiefs and improves them to 24-24 on the season's second half, and 62-55 overall.
The Chiefs got on the board in the first off starter Sugar Ray Marimon. Hak-Ju Lee led off with a single and stole second base. Logan Watkins followed with a single that scored Lee for an early 1-0 lead but Watkins was thrown out at second base.
The Chiefs added another run off Marimon in the fourth on a deep fly. Nelson Perez led off the inning and put the second pitch down the line in right for a solo home run. It was his 20th career home run in a Chiefs uniform and put the Chiefs up 2-0.
The Bees came back to tie it in the fifth off reliever Nick Struck. Carlo Testa singled up the middle and scored with one out when Jose Bonilla crushed a pitch over the palm trees in the left-field berm for a home run to tie the game 2-2.
The Chiefs threatened to open the game in the middle innings, twice leaving the bases loaded to end the inning. Facing Marimon in the fifth Peoria loaded the bases with two outs but Brandon May flew out to center to end the frame. The Chiefs also loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth facing reliever Scott Kelley, but Justin Bour struck out swinging to keep the game tied.
The Chiefs finally broke the tie in the seventh off Kelley. Perez reached on a fielding error by shortstop Alex McClure and advanced to second on a May walk. Luis Flores walked to load the bases and Anthony Giansanti singled to score Perez and keep the bases loaded. Lee brought home May on a fielders' choice and Watkins singled home Flores to make it 5-2 Chiefs.
Marcus Hatley went two innings and did not allow a run on two hits while walking one and striking out two. Struck (8-8) threw five innings and gave up two runs on four hits while tying his career high in strikeouts with nine. Yohan Gonzalez pitched the final two innings and did not surrender a run on one hit to record his fourth save of the season.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Nelson Perez (LF) - Perez went 2-for-4 and hit his 20th home run as a Chief. He also drew a walk, stole a base, scored twice, drove in one run, and made a leaping catch at the wall in left field to propel the Chiefs to victory.
