Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
After what was officially an 11-minute rain delay, Thursday's game got under way before 6,851 fans at McCoy Stadium. A few minutes later, the Pawtucket Red Sox had a 2-0 lead over Scranton Wilkes-Barre and did not look back. Designated hitter Ryan Shealy blasted a homerun to give the PawSox an early lead, and some late offense made for a comfortable win for Pawtucket against their International League-North rival.
An afternoon of heavy rains was in the forecast late Thursday afternoon and hours before the game the tarp was out protecting the field. Pawtucket starting pitcher Fabio Castro protected an early lead in what was his first win in nine starts on the season. Castro struck out seven Yankees over five shutout innings of three-hit baseball. Not only had Castro not recorded a win in any of his previous eight starts, but the game marked the first time in which Pawtucket pulled out a victory in a game that Castro started. With the win Castro's overall record moves to 5-7.
Shealy had been marred in a 1-for-11 drought entering Thursday's game but connected on an opposite field homerun in the first inning to give the PawSox an early 2-0 lead. The line drive blast to right field knocked in Josh Reddick who led off the game with a double. With the first inning homerun two of Shealy's last three hits had gone for homeruns dating back to his game-winning homerun Friday at Toledo.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia collected his first hit as a member of the Boston Red Sox organization. The sixth inning double provided his new team with the first of three runs in the inning to extend their lead to 5-0. Saltalamacchia doubled home Daniel Nava from first base for the first run of the inning after he had reached on an infield single to the first baseman. After a pair of groundouts, Aaron Bates smacked the second opposite field homerun of the game for the PawSox, and his tenth of the season.
Saltalamacchia proceeded to double down the left field line his next time up and was one of three PawSox players with two hits, along with Bates and Reddick. Tommy Hottovy, Robert Manuel and Michael Bowden combined with Castro on the shutout which was the second in three games for Pawtucket.
Pawtucket will face the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees in the second game of a four-game series Friday evening. Friday's first pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. and it will be Kris Johnson (4-9, 5.29 ERA) for Pawtucket taking on the Yankees.
