Rochester, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Rochester Red Wings by the score of 8 to 2 on Thursday afternoon in front of a crowd of 6,923. The Chiefs scored five runs over the first two innings and had twelve hits on the game.

Syracuse (57-55) starter Jordan Zimmermann went three innings in his first start with the Chiefs since opening day 2009, also against Rochester. Zimmermann did not allow a hit and struck out three while walking just one batter. Zimmermann is working his way back from Tommy John surgery late last season.

Jeff Mandel pitched four innings in relief of Zimmermann and allowed just one run on four hits to earn the victory. Jason Bergmann and Ron Villone both pitched out of the Syracuse bullpen as well.

Rochester (40-73) lost for the tenth time in the last eleven games. The Wings scraped together five hits against four different Syracuse pitchers. Starter Anthony Swarzak was the losing pitcher pitching into the fifth, but he did not retire a batter in that frame. Swarzak allowed eight runs, seven of which were earned, on nine hits and struck out one batter.

The Wings used Matt Fox and Jose Lugo for two innings each out of the bullpen and Pat Neshek for one inning.

Syracuse got multi-hit games from Michael Martinez, Kevin Mench, Pete Orr, and Boomer Whiting and as a whole collected eight doubles - a season high.

On Friday, the Chiefs and the Red Wings will meet again at Frontier Field. The scheduled starters are Erik Arnesen (3-7, 4.16) for Syracuse and Glen Perkins (4-9, 6.26) for Rochester. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
