G-Braves Start Road Trip with Win Over Lehigh Valley

The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 6-1 on Thursday Night at Coca-Cola Park. The G-Braves pitching staff held the IronPigs to 1 run by combining for 12 strikeouts and allowing only 3 walks. Gwinnett (53-58) are now 15.5 games behind Durham in the International League South and remain 7 games behind Louisville in the wild card hunt.

It Was Over When: In the top of the 3rd inning, Freddie Freeman hit a 2-run home run that put the G-Braves in front, 3-0. The IronPigs would score a run later in the inning but would never catch up to the lead that was built by Gwinnett.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Minor pitched only 1.2 innings tonight and is scheduled to make his first Major League start on Monday for Atlanta against the Houston Astros. Joe Oretegano (3-8) earned his first win since dropping 8 of his last 9 starts.

At the plate: Freeman hit his 15th home run of the season. Overall, Freeman went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. Joe Thurston (2-for-3) and Brandon Hicks (1-for-4) each had an RBI.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Drew Carpenter was credited with the loss, allowing 4 R/ER on 6 hits in 4.0 IP.

At the plate: Rich Thompson was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Melvin Dorta was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

On Deck: Gwinnett takes on Lehigh Valley in game two of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coca-Cola Park. G-Braves RHP Todd Redmond (8-10, 4.51 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Nate Bump (8-4, 3.33 ERA) of the IronPigs.
