 Pawtucket Red Sox

Bates and PawSox Walk-Off with 5-4 Victory

August 3, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

On an afternoon where 10,137 fans showed up at McCoy Stadium to cheer on the Pawtucket Red Sox, the PawSox treated them to a walk-off victory in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Aaron Bates' opposite-field single with two outs in the ninth inning drove home Gil Velazquez from third base with the game-winning run. Velazquez doubled to begin the inning and was at third base with one out when Josh Reddick popped up to third base to bring up Bates.

En route to the victory, the PawSox outhit the Bulls 11-to-5 on the afternoon. In the third game of his rehab stint, Jacoby Ellsbury recorded three hits to raise his batting average to .471. Also recording multi-hit games for the PawSox were Niuman Romero, Josh Reddick and Dusty Brown who had two hits apiece.

The bullpen came on in relief of starter Adam Mills to allow one run over the final six innings of the game. Mills, who went just three innings on the afternoon, left the game trailing 3-1 but the bullpen kept the game within reach for the PawSox offense that had exploded for 12 runs the previous night.

In his three innings of work Mills allowed three runs- all of them earned. On the outing, he allowed three hits, including a two-run home run to Elliot Johnson in the third inning, and did not factor in the decision.

Pawtucket will enjoy a day-off Wednesday before kicking off a four-game series Thursday against the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Thursday's first pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. and Kris Johnson (4-9, 5.29 ERA) will be taking the mound for the PawSox.
