Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

KALAMAZOO, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums took a 3-0 lead in the to of the first inning only to see the Kalamazoo Kings rally for a 9-5 victory.

Traverse City got on the board early as in the first inning with runners on the corners, C. J. Ziegler took Kings' starter Joe DiPietro deep for his 11th homer of the season for a 3-0 Beach Bums lead. The homer put Ziegler second on the TC single season long ball list behind only John Alonso, who hit 15 last season.

Kalamazoo would get on the board in the third as with the bases loaded, Ryan Platt, who had escaped a bases loaded jam in the second, walked Matt Greener to force in a run. On the next pitch, Destan Makonnen drove a grand slam over the left field fence to put the Kings up 5-3. The game would remain that way until the sixth where Kalamazoo scored for four more runs, including a two-run homer by Greener to go up 9-3.

The Beach Bums would rally in the seventh as Andrew Marshall walked to lead off the inning, followed by a double from Chris Engell to move Marshall to third. Matt Brown hit a sac fly to deep center to score Marshall and advance Engell to third. Engell then came home on an RBI single from Michael Diaz to cut the Kings' lead to 9-5.

Traverse City pushed Kalamazoo to the brink in the ninth as with two outs, singles by Chase Burch and J. T. Hall and a walk by Ziegler loaded the bases, but Scott Reid was able to get the final out of the game on a grounder to third to end the rally.

DiPietro (4-7) earned the win for the Kings going 6.2 innings. Ryan Platt (7-2) took the loss for the Beach Bums allowing five runs in five innings, while still striking out eight, extending his Frontier League leading total to 90.

Offensively, Ziegler and Diaz each collected two hits while Matt Brown reached base twice on a walk and a single to extend his consecutive game on base streak to a Frontier League high and team record 35 games.

The series finale comes up on Tuesday night as Jonny Bravo (2-0, 2.39) takes the mound for the Beach Bums against Guido Fonseca, Jr. (1-4, 6.30) for the Kings. The Beach Bums return home for Grandparents's Day and a Winnings Wednesday against the Oakland County Cruisers on Wednesday evening.
