Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The League of Dreams youth baseball program will finish its inaugural season with a series of short games and a picnic at Veterans Memorial Stadium this Tuesday night, July 27.
There will be games at 5:30, 6 and 6:30, with team picnics to follow each game.
The League of Dreams was a joint venture this summer by the Cedar Rapids Kernels, Perfect Game USA, Minor League Baseball, Minor League Baseball Charities, the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company and the Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department. There were 76 kids in the program from Wilson, Van Buren, Taylor, Cleveland and Harrison elementary schools in town. All of the boys and girls in the program were in the 2nd and 3rd grade this past school year. The program lasted for eight weeks.
The League of Dreams is an outgrowth of the Jones Park Project, which was announced last fall as a response to the Flood of 2008. This summer's program was geared toward kids who attend school in some of the flood-affected areas, but included additional kids as well. All of the kids played for free and wore uniforms provided by the sponsoring organizations. Many of these boys and girls probably would not have had a chance to play ball this summer if not for this program, and we feel we've developed some baseball fans for life.
