Spikes Use Second-Inning Surge to Stop Doubledays, 14-5

AUBURN, NY - The State College Spikes used a seven-run second inning to power another tremendous offensive effort, completing a six-game road trip with a 14-5 win over the Auburn Doubledays at Falcon Park on Monday night.

Coming into the second inning with a 2-0 lead, State College (16-15) scored all sevent runs in the second with two outs, starting with a pair of runs off of an infield error. Adalberto Santos then tripled home another two runs, and Matt Curry followed with an RBI single. Chase Lyles then put a cap on the damage with his fourth home run of the year, a two-run blast to left field to give the Spikes a 9-0 edge.

State College then added another run in the sixth on Santos's RBI double, and three in the seventh. Pat Irvine provided an RBI triple in the ninth inning to end the Spikes' scoring, Auburn (12-19), however, was not yet ready to go quietly and scored five runs in the ninth inning to ruin the State College shutout bid.

Lyles finished 3-for-4 with three total runs batted in, with Santos also driving in three runs. Four other Spikes provided multi-hit performances as every starter collected at least one hit on the evening.

Tyler Waldron (1-2) provided the Spikes with a stellar start on the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out five over five innings of work to earn his first victory as a professional. It was the fourth straight five-inning start for the Pirates' fifth-round draft choice in 2010.

Auburn starter Jesse Hernandez (1-2) allowed eight runs, but only two of them were earned in his 1 2/3 innings on the mound. Hernandez also yielded seven hits and two walks while striking out one.

The win clinched a series victory for State College, as well as a .500 record on the road trip, which started with an 11-1 win over the Connecticut Tigers.

Tuesday, the Spikes return home to start a five-game homestand with a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send right-hander Zack Von Rosenberg (1-4) to the mound fresh off his first career win as a professional in his last outing at Connecticut. Mahoning Valley has not yet named its starting pitcher for Tuesday's contest.

The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive an Eco-Friendly Cooler Bag courtesy of Sanitary Maintenance. Plus, fans bringing their old computers and computer parts to the Skills of Central PA Computer Recyling Event in the Porter North lot at the ballpark from 3-7 p.m. will receive free VIP parking passes.
