July 14, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Burlington, IA - The Hot Rods put together a spirited rally on Wednesday night, scoring four runs in the sixth and then putting a man at third base with two outs in the ninth inning. But Ty Morrison lined out to first base to end the game as the Hot Rods lost a 7-6 decision to start a three-game series against the Burlington Bees. The loss is the second straight for the Hot Rods, dropping them to 2-2 on their road trip and 5-7 against Western Division teams in 2010.

The Hot Rods mounted their comeback in the sixth inning trailing 7-2. Starter Sugar Ray Marimon started the inning with a strikeout before hitting Tyler Bortnick and then walking Brett Nommensen. He gave way at that point to Brandon Barrow, who immediately ran into trouble. The lefty surrendered a double to Ryan Wiegand to score Bortnick and Nommensen to cut the deficit to 7-4. A few pitches later, Mark Thomas smashed his sixth home run deep into the night to cut the deficit to just one run at 7-6.

Over the next few innings the Hot Rods had several chances to tie the game. In the seventh, Bortnick singled into left field but Cody Rogers was thrown out at home plate for the final out of the inning. Brett Nommensen walked to lead off the eighth, but he was caught stealing at second base before Wiegand and Thomas struck out to end the frame.

In the ninth, it looked like the Hot Rods had one last rally in them. Dustin Biell walked to lead off the inning. He was sacrificed to second by Julio Cedeno before taking third on a ground out by Robi Estrada. That brought up Ty Morrison, who smashed a line drive right at the first baseman Joey Lewis for the game's final, stranding the tying run at third.

Burlington got its runs early and often against Hot Rods starter Jason McEachern. The Bees got a pair of solo home runs from Carlo Testa in the first and third innings. They also scored three runs in the second before adding another run in the fourth.

McEachern ended up working just four innings, surrendering six runs on nine hits. He gave up two more homers, raising his season total to 13, seven of those coming in his last three outings.

Aaron Dott came on in the fifth, giving up an unearned run before settling down to work the final four innings. He allowed just one hit, walking two and striking out five.

Burlington's Marimon earned the win by throwing 5.1 innings. He gave up four runs on three hits, four K's, and a walk.

Rogers, meanwhile, had another good night for Bowling Green. He was 1-for-3 with another solo home run, his fourth long ball in just seven games. He also reached base via a walk in the seventh.

The series continues on Thursday night at 6:30 PM CDT. RHP Kirby Yates (1-3, 2.21) gets the ball for the Hot Rods against Burlington RHP Matt Mitchell (1-5, 5.02). You can follow the game on the radio with Tom Gauthier beginning at 6:15 PM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.

The Hot Rods return home to begin an action-packed home stand on Wednesday, July 21 against the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. For tickets and to check out the list of upcoming promotions, visit www.bghotrods.com.
