Daniel Keefe Joins the Chiefs

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that relief pitcher Daniel Keefe will join the Chiefs and be in the bullpen for Wednesday's 7:00 p.m. game against Dayton. In a corresponding roster move Chiefs starter Jeffry Antigua will be placed on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury to keep the Chiefs roster at 25.

Keefe joins the Chiefs for the first time in his career, and so far through 2010 as a member of the Boise Hawks he has gone 0-1 with a 4.20 ERA in nine bullpen appearances while recording one save. He has pitched 15 innings this season including tying his career-high for innings pitched with three on July 2. He last pitched on Sunday, going 1/3 of an inning and giving up five runs on three hits and two walks and was saddled with the loss against Eugene.

Keefe spent all of 2009 with Boise. With the Boise Hawks in 2009 Keefe went 2-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 26 appearances out of the bullpen for the Hawks last season. He also recorded four saves in 35 innings pitched while striking out 31 batters. A 2009 14th round pick out of the University of Tampa, Keefe posted a 4-5 record with a 4.13 ERA in his final year of college, appearing in 20 games.

Antigua was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2006 and is in his second stint with the Chiefs, having played in Peoria during the second half of 2009. This season he has posted a 3-5 record to go with a 4.93 ERA through 16 appearances, 15 of them starts. He has pitched 76 and 2/3 innings and struck out 64 batters this season while walking just 28.

Antigua last started for the Chiefs on July 3 at Kane County, when he gave up five runs on eight hits while striking out two in five innings of work. His best start of the season came on May 16 at Burlington when he pitched a five-inning shutout and allowed just two hits and struck out four to record his first win of the season. Last season he went 6-1 with a 3.01 ERA over 14 appearances, 12 of them starts, split between Boise and Peoria.
