Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, Ind.) - Outfielder Greg Alexander hit a walk-off two-run home run against closer J.J. Pacella in an Evansville Otters 6-5 win over the Lake Erie Crushers on Sunday night.
The win marked the first victory for Evansville manager Andy McCauley and sends the Otters into the All Star break on a heroic moment.
Lake Erie starter Phil Rummel and Otters righty Nick Sottung began the game in a pitcher's duel as both teams stayed scoreless into the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Cohen ripped an RBI single to fight field in that inning, scoring Alexander and pushing Evansville ahead 1-0.
The Crushers stormed right back for a pair of runs in the fifth inning to then go ahead 2-1.
The score remained that way into the bottom of the seventh inning when Evansville strung together a few hits. Derek Wiley doubled home a pair of runs and Cody Ross walked with the bases loaded later in the inning to move ahead 4-2.
In the ninth, Jared Simon came in to close the game for Evansville but ran into a jam. A leadoff error started the inning and following an RBI groundout, Dom Duggan came up to the plate. The hitter reached on an infield single and throwing error from Cody Ross to tie up the game. Shortstop Jodam Rivera then doubled in the run to push ahead 5-4.
Closer J.J. Pacella then entered the game looking for his sixth save of the season. Things were heading in that direction after the reliever retired the first two batters but Pacella then allowed a walk to Pat Rose. Greg Alexander stepped up as the go-ahead run and the outfielder crushed a game-winning two-run home run above the left center field fence for a walk-off home run.
It was the second time Evansville conquered Pacella including a July 4thgame where the Otters scored seven runs against the closer including back-to-back-to-back home runs. Alexander's home run also marks the second walk-off home run for the Otters as Jake Rogers hit a three-run shot to end a game last week for Evansville.
The Otters improve to 17-30 with the win as Lake Erie drops to 27-21.
