Evansville Walks off with Win Over Crushers

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Lake Erie Crushers rallied from a two-run deficit to take the lead with three ninth-inning runs, but fell to the Evansville Otters 6-5 on a walk-off homer in the final game of the first half of 2010.

Lake Erie starting pitcher Phil Rummel retired nine straight hitters entering the fourth. A couple of errors placed two runners on base for Brandon Cohen, who netted his Frontier League best 43rd RBI with a single to right driving home Greg Alexander. Rummel escaped the inning with just one run thanks to a double play. Rummel pitched five inning in the game and did not factor in the decision.

The Crushers responded in the top of the fifth inning, taking advantage of an Evansville error to score a pair of runs. Arden McWilliams opened the inning by being hit by a pitch. He was replaced at first on a fielder's choice by Raphael Turner, who promptly stole second. Dom Duggan logged an infield single and both runners moved up on a groundout before a throwing error enabled two runs to score.

The Otters were able to retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pat Rose walked on four pitches to open the inning. Greg Alexander followed with a single and both runners scored when Derek Wiley doubled down the left field line. Cody Ross drew a bases loaded walk later in the frame to force in the third run as Evansville led 4-2.

The Crushers plated three runs in the top of the ninth to rally against Jared Simon. Drew Saylor reached on an error to open the inning and scored on an infield single off the bat of Dom Duggan. Duggan moved to second and Arden McWilliams crossed the plate on a throwing error on the play. Jodam Rivera followed by doubling to left to score Duggan and give the Crushers a 6-5 lead. J.J. Pacella entered in the bottom of the inning and retired the first two batters before walking Pat Rose. Evansville left fielder Greg Alexander ended the game with a walk-off homer on an 0-1 pitch, clearing the wall in left.

Dom Duggan recorded a pair of hits and scored two runs out of the leadoff slot. Alberto ROlon struck out three in two scoreless innings of work.

The Crushers (27-21) will have five players representing the team in the Frontier League All-Star Game hosted by Southern Illinois on Wednesday night at Rent One Park in Marion, Ill. Lake Erie resumes play on Friday night at All Pro Freight Stadium by hosting the Windy City ThunderBolts in a 7:05 p.m. contest. Country music star Alan Jackson will perform at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night.

- The Crushers concluded the road trip with a 4-2 record, taking two of three at both Florence and Evansville; Lake Erie was 26-22 at the break in 2009

- Joel Collins batted in the cleanup slot for the first time this season

- Raphael Turner stole his third base of the season in the fifth inning

- Lake Erie made a roster move following the game, trading Evansville native RHP Travis LaMar to Evansville for future considerations; LaMar, a true rookie out of Wright State, pitched twice while with the Crushers
