Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

Aaron Bates had one of the worst nights of his career at the plate Thursday night in a 9-2 loss to Rochester. Friday night, he made up for it.

Bates' three-run blast in the seventh inning turned a 5-5 deadlock into an 8-5 PawSox lead which they did not relinquish. The home run, Bates' eighth of the season, drove in Tug Hulett and Bubba Bell and was the game-winning blow in an 8-6 PawSox victory.

The PawSox left fielder finished the game 1-for-3 with four RBI. Thursday night, Bates went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts, earning him the proverbial golden sombrero.

Pawtucket jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. After catcher Mark Wagner grounded out to score Lars Anderson, Jorge Jimenez hit his second home run of the season that scored Josh Reddick.

Hulett, the designated hitter Friday, went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. His double in the fifth made the game 4-2 before Bates' followed with a sacrifice fly to give the PawSox the 5-2 lead through five innings. In his second outing since being converted from a starter to a reliever, Michael Bowden earned his fifth win of the season. In one inning of work the righty retired all three batters he faced. Chad Paronto came on to pitch the last two innings, allowing one run, to earn his second save of the season.

Pawtucket's starter Adam Mills did not factor in the decision despite holding a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth inning. After allowing a leadoff double to Jose Morales, the second hitter of the inning deposited a ball over the picnic area in right field for a two-run homer. The homerun was Brian Dinkelman's fifth on the year.

Brendan Harris, Rochester's light-hitting shortstop had not hit a homerun entering Friday night, but he promptly smoked a ball over the wall in left-center field to tie the game 5-5.

Harris would be the last batter Mills would face on the night, earning him the no-decision. Mills pitched five innings, walked two, allowed eight hits, struck out six, and allowed five runs-all earned.

The PawSox will begin a two-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Pawtucket's Fabio Castro (3-6, 6.75 ERA) will face Syracuse's Matt Chico (3-4, 4.42 ERA).
