Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets and Kannapolis Intimidators have proven more than a few times in their season series that both teams are capable of scoring runs by the truckload. They did it again on Friday night as the Intimidators held on for an 11-10 win over the GreenJackets.

The teams combined for 29 hits in a game that Kannapolis led by six runs going into the bottom of the fifth before the GreenJackets mounted their rally. Augusta scored five times in the inning to cut a big lead down to one. Ryan Cavan, Hector Sanchez and Luke Anders all had run-scoring hits for the Jackets while Tommy Joseph doubled home a pair of runs in the frame.

The Intimidators got a run back in the sixth but Augusta tied things at ten with single runs in each of the next two innings. Ydwin Villegas tripled in the sixth and scored when he was balked home by reliever Garrett Johnson to cut the Kannapolis lead to one. Tommy Joseph led off the seventh with an opposite field solo home run to tie things at ten.

In the eighth inning though, the luck would shift back to Kannapolis. With runners at the corners and one out, a bad hop turned a possible double play ball into a run when the Jackets were only able to get one out on a ball that hopped up to hit Villegas in the chest. The go-ahead run scored off Wilmin Rodriguez (0-1) to give Kannapolis an 11-10 lead. The Jackets managed just one baserunner over the last two innings and went quietly in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Augusta actually led in the first inning on an RBI triple from Nick Liles and a groundout by Chris Dominguez. The Intimidators got a run back in the second on back-to-back doubles from Ryan Hamme and Jose Vargas before blowing the game open in the fourth with a seven-run inning. Kannapolis sent 11 men to the plate and got six hits while taking advantage of two Augusta errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball in the frame.

Hector Sanchez hit a solo home run in the fourth to cut into the deficit but Kannapolis got that run back in their half of the fifth before the GreenJackets had their big fifth inning - a frame that saw them rattle off seven consecutive hits to score their fie runs.

Starter Jeremy Toole threw just 3.1 innings for the GreenJackets before giving way to the Augusta bullpen while Kannapolis starter Cameron Bayne struggled through the fifth inning, scattering 11 hits and allowing eight runs - seven earned. Johnson (4-3) survived his two-inning stint to get the win while Taylor Thompson retired six of the seven hitters he faced over the last two innings to earn his second save of the year. Thompson struck out four of those six GreenJackets.

Game three of the series will feature Brian Irving (4-2, 4.30) against Justin Collop (5-6, 5.21) on Military Appreciation Night, with the GreenJackets donning special camouflage uniforms that will be auctioned off for charity after the game. General admission seats are all sold out for the contest while limited seating remains in the box and reserved sections. Fans are urged to call ahead if at all possible for seats. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
