July 3, 2010 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

Frisco, TX - A night after rain washed away the game between the Cardinals and RoughRiders, both teams got back on the field Saturday evening for a doubleheader.

In game one, both teams failed to score in the first two innings before Frisco broke through in the third against Cardinals' starter Gary Daley. After a lead off single, a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Taylor Teagarden delivered an RBI single to grab a 1-0 lead. Emerson Frostad followed with a single to load the bases. Joey Butler then followed with an RBI single, Andy Jenkins drew a bases loaded walk and Mitch Hilligoss singled to left to score two more runs before Daley was taken out of the game. With runners at second and third, Jason Buursma got a line out for the second out before Endy Chavez rolled a ball to first baseman Curt Smith who made an error allowing another run to score and putting runners on the corners. With Matt Lawson at the plate, Buursma threw a wild pitch allowing Hilligoss to score to put a cap on the scoring at seven runs for Frisco on six hits to lead 7-0.

Springfield would respond in the top of the 4th against RoughRiders' starter Richard Bleier as Curt Smith walked, Matt Carpenter singled and Andrew Brown scored both runners with a double to make the score 7-2. Pete Kozma followed with a walk and Jose Garcia singled to score Brown to make it 7-3. Antone DeJesus would then single to plate Kozma to bring the score to 7-4. Still with no outs, Daryl Jones singled to right field to load the bases for the Cardinals. Bleier would be taken out of the game at that point for Brennan Garr out of the bullpen and the rain came down again for the second straight day to delay the game in the middle of the Springfield rally.

After a one hour and 36 minute rain delay, the Cardinals would not score another run in the 4th as Brennan Garr got a pop out, a strikeout and a ground out to end the Springfield threat.

In the bottom of the 4th, Tyler Norrick would work his way through a bases loaded situation without allowing a run to score. Norrick would not be as fortunate in the bottom of the 5th though as he walked three and allowed three hits to plate three Frisco runs to bring the score to 10-4. Tom Eager would come in out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and no outs and get out of the inning without allowing another run to score.

The Cardinals would plate a run in the top of the 7th on a Jose Garcia RBI single to bring the score to 10-5, but Antone DeJesus would strikeout with runners at 1st and 2nd to end the ball game with the final score of 10-5. Gary Daley suffered his 10th loss of the season.

In the game two, the Cardinals sent right hander Scott McGregor to the mound in hopes of a split of the double header and a win for the three game series.

As was the case in game one, Frisco jumped out in front of Springfield, but this time in the bottom of the 1st inning. After a lead off hit by pitch and a stole base, Engel Beltre singled to center to drive in the first run of the contest and make the score 1-0.

In the 2nd, Frisco added to their lead as Mitch Hilligoss doubled to lead off the inning went to third on an error on Pete Kozma at shortstop putting runners on the corners. Renny Osuna then grounded out allowing Hilligoss to score give the RoughRiders a 2-0 lead.

Springfield would get on the scoreboard in an odd way in the top of the 3rd as Antone DeJesus singled and Adron Chambers singled with one out to put runners on the corners. The Cardinals would put the runners in motion on a 3-2 pitch to Pete Kozma. The pitch was called for strike three for the second out as DeJesus broke for home and Chambers broke for second. Chambers would over slide second base and was called out for the third out of the inning, but DeJesus had crossed the plate prior to the 3rd out being recorded to cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the 4th, Frisco would regain their two run lead as the Cardinals made two errors to help out. Mitch Hilligoss would single to start the inning then move to third on a throwing error by pitch Scott McGregor. With one out, Renny Osuna would then ground a ball to first that went under the glove of Andrew Brown for another error allowing Hilligoss to score to bring the score to 3-1. Springfield would wind up losing by that final score of 3-1.

Scott McGregor would throw well in his 3rd start with Springfield as he went six strong innings allowing three runs, only one earned, on six hits while striking out three.

The Cardinals will head out to Midland, TX for a three game series against the RockHounds beginning on Sunday night at 6:00pm. In game one against Midland, Springfield will send left hander Nick Additon (3-5) to the mound against left hander Anthony Capra (5-7) for the RockHounds.
