Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds collected ten hits on Wednesday night, but had just two runs to show for it as they fell to the Staten Island Yankees for the second straight night, 4-2.
After two scoreless innings for both clubs, the Yankees got on the scoreboard in the third. Staten Island CF Eduardo Sosa hit a one-out double off of IronBirds starter LHP Justin Anderson. LF Shane Brown knocked him in with a single, and then advanced to second on the throw home. DH Isaiah Brown singled putting runners on the corners. The next batter, 1B Kyle Roller, blooped a single down the left field line, knocking in Brown from third base, and making it 2-0.
Anderson went on to set down seven batters in a row, starting with the final hitter of the third inning. He found himself back in trouble in the sixth. He surrendered a lead-off single to Roller. Anderson then walked RF Kelvin De Leon, putting two on with nobody out. The IronBirds pulled Anderson out of the game and brought in LHP Ashur Tolliver. He surrendered back-to-back singles to 3B Kevin Mahoney and SS Jose Mojica, driving in two runs and making it 4-0.
Anderson was charged with four runs, all earned, on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three in five-plus innings of work.
The IronBirds chipped away at the four-run deficit in the sixth. With one man out, DH Zach Moore worked a walk. RF Jeremy Nowak eventually knocked him in with a single.
Aberdeen tacked on one more run in the seventh. SS Michael Rooney worked a lead-off walk. CF Trent Mummey then doubled, putting two in scoring position. LF Kipp Schutz would knock in Rooney with a sac fly to right, making it a 4-2 ball game.
RHP Mikey O'Brien (3-0) got the win for Staten Island. He allowed one run on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Anderson (1-1) took the loss. RHP Preston Claiborne (1) pitched a perfect ninth to record his first save.
