Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA (June 16, 2010) - Jorge Padron went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI and Ryan Lavarnway added three hits, including his 14th home run of the season, as the Salem Sox defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks 9-6 on Wednesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. The win was the second straight for the Sox and the eighth consecutive victory over the Blue Crew dating back to April 27. The triumph was also the fourth in the last five contests for Salem overall and sixth in the last seven games at home.
Padron started off his flawless night in the first with a bases loaded two-out two-RBI single that actually cleared the bases as Padron advanced to second on a throwing error by Nick Francis, scoring Oscar Tejeda from first to make it 3-0 Salem after one.
After Wilmington got back to within 3-2 in the top of the third thanks to Adrian Ortiz's RBI triple and subsequent run on a sac fly, the Sox responded with a run of their own thanks to the speed of Peter Hissey. The Salem center fielder walked to lead off the frame, stole second base, advanced to third on a single by Lavarnway and eluded the tag of Blue Rock catcher Salvador Perez at home on a sac fly by Tejeda to make it 4-2.
Salem doubled its lead in the fifth. After Lavarnway earned a leadoff walk, Will Middlebrooks laced his 20th double of the season to score Lavarnway and make it 5-2. Middlebrooks advanced to third on Padron's third single of the night and came home a sac fly by Tim Federowicz.
The Sox put the game away in the seventh with a three-run outburst off Wilmington reliever Brendan Lafferty. Lavarnway led off the frame with a mammoth solo shot over the left field wall to extend the lead to 7-2. The round-tripper tied Lavarnway with Winston's Seth Loman for the Carolina League lead. After Tejeda and Padron singled, Federowicz drilled a one-out double to left-center to bring in both runners and make it 9-2.
For the second time in as many nights, the Blue Rocks attempted a comeback against the Sox bullpen, but fell a few runs short. In the eighth, Eric Hosmer crushed a two-run dinger to right off Salem reliever Michael Lee, and Jamie Romak made it back-to-back shots with a solo homer to left to make it 9-5. Wilmington added a single run in the ninth to get back to within three, but could not inch any closer.
Padron and Lavarnway accounted for seven of Salem's 12 hits and four of the team's nine runs on the night. Federowicz was solid as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, sac fly and three RBI. The Sox catcher is now tied with Middlebrooks for the team lead with 20 doubles, as Middlebrooks added two hits on the evening, including a two-bagger, in four trips to the dish.
Miguel Gonzalez had his best start yet for the Sox in his comeback from Tommy John, going four solid innings while allowing two runs on four hits. Lee earned the win to improve to 5-3 on the year in four innings of relief.
The Sox look for their second consecutive sweep and ninth straight win over Wilmington on Thursday night at Lewis-Gale Field at 7:05 PM. Two of the best pitchers in the league take the bump as Salem sends Brock Huntzinger (6-3, 2.99) to battle with the Blue Rocks' John Lamb (2-2, 2.48).
