Chiefs Pitcher James Leverton Promoted to Daytona

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that All-Star left-handed reliever James Leverton has been promoted to the Daytona Cubs of the High-A Florida State League. There has not been a replacement announced for the Chiefs roster which now consists of 24 players.

Leverton, 24, joined the Chiefs from Extended Spring training on April 17 after spending all of 2009 with Daytona. Leverton picked up a win in his first outing in the Chiefs home opener against Burlington to begin a seven game stretch where he earned either a save or a win. Overall in 19 appearances out of the bullpen, Leverton was 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA and four saves. Through 27 and 2/3 innings pitched Leverton struck out 25 batters and held opponents to a .228 batting average. On June 8 Leverton was one of five Chiefs named to the Midwest League's Western Division All-Star team.

The Rockwall, Texas native was drafted in the eighth round of the 2008 draft out of Texas Tech University. Through this season he has a career 15-15 record as a member of the Cubs organization to go along with a 4.19 ERA. As a member of the High-A Cubs last season he went 9-11 with a 4.35 ERA in 26 appearances, 25 of them starts.

The Daytona Cubs are in the midst of their first series since the Florida State League's All-Star game, a three-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the Detroit Tigers organization. The Chiefs are playing their second-to-last series of the first half against the Burlington Bees in the midst of a race for a playoff spot. The Chiefs take on the Bees tonight in Burlington at 6:30 p.m.
