Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA (June 3, 2010) - Ryan Lavarnway belted an early solo homer to surge Salem to a 1-0 lead, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dominated the rest of the way in an 8-2 victory for the visitors at Lewis-Gale Field. The Myrtle win snapped a streak of ten straight Salem wins over Myrtle Beach, dating back to last August. Pelican starter J.J. Hoover tossed six and two thirds innings, allowing just four hits and two runs, while two Myrtle relievers combined to throw hitless, scoreless baseball the rest of the way in handing Salem its fifth straight loss. With 16 games remaining before the All-Star Break, the Red Sox have fallen five games behind the Winston-Salem Dash in the Carolina League Southern Division.
Myrtle Beach used a pair of big innings, first plating three in the fourth off Red Sox starter Fabian Williamson and then scoring four more in the eighth off reliever Zach Hammes to break it open. Eight of the nine Pelicans had at least one hit, while Samuel Sime, Jesus Sucre, and Ryan Barba each recorded multiple hits for Myrtle Beach.
The top third of the Salem lineup combined to go 0-12 and Salem finished with just four hits on the night. Lavarnway's homer was his 12th of the season, tying him with Winston's Seth Loman for most in the Carolina League. But Salem's 1-0 lead was erased when the Pelicans scored three in the fourth. Sucre's single drove in Sime to tie the game, and Barba drove in two a couple batters later to make it 3-1.
An unearned run off Michael Lee in the fifth inning made it 4-1, and though Salem cut the deficit to 4-2 on an RBI double from Will Middlebrooks in the seventh, the Pelicans splashed four more on the board in the top of the eighth, more than enough insurance for the perfect Pelican pen.
Fresh off being named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, Hoover earned the win to improve to 3-3. Williamson lasted just four innings and was tagged with the loss, dropping him to 4-3 on the season.
The Red Sox and Pelicans reunite on Friday night as the week-long homestand continues at Lewis-Gale Field. Caleb Clay gets the ball for Salem opposite Randall Delgado for Myrtle Beach, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
