Greenville Drive News Release
Kannapolis, NC - As good as the Drive (26-28) have been in series openers this season, posting a 10-4 overall record and having one each of the last six, game two has been sort of a letdown.
Following Wednesday afternoon's 12-3 throttling at the hands of the Kannapolis Intimidators (27-26), the Drive have lost five of the six second game of a series.
It was a quick outing for Greenville starter, Manuel Rivera (2-5), who surrendered seven runs in just 3.2 innings, and watched his ERA rise by more than a run when all was said and done.
The Intimidators struck quickly off the southpaw, for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on Ian Gac's two-run double. With two outs and only one aboard in the bottom of the fourth, Kannapolis pounced for six more runs.
Three straight batters singled for the Intimidators, including run-scoring base hits by Dan Wagner and Kyle Colligan. Colligan's two-run single sent Rivera to showers, as the Drive turned to Pedro Perez out of the bullpen.
But the right-hander was greeted rudely by Gac, the first batter Perez faced, who sent a 2-2 offering over the rightfield wall for a three-run homer.
By the time the Drive put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth, it was too late. All of Greenville's runs came on one swing of the bat as Reynaldo Rodriguez blasted a three-run homer, his second round tripper in as many days.
Kannapolis added insult to injury, closing out the game's scoring with four more runs in the home half of the sixth.
The Drive and Intimidators face off in the third game of the series on Thursday, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. Lefty Drake Britton (0-1, 2.70 ERA) will take to the mound for Greenville, as Kannapolis counters with right-hander Matt Hopps (1-3, 6.17 ERA).
Following their road trip, the Drive return home to Fluor Field on Saturday, June 5th for a four-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets. For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
