Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (May 11, 2010) - The Red Sox mustered only one hit after the first inning and the Keys scored three in the ninth to break a 1-1 tie and take their second straight game from Salem at Lewis-Gale Field. Two errors by the Sox in the top of the ninth aided the Keys rally, and the Frederick pitching stymied Salem's offense throughout the game. After winning seven straight to begin the month of May, Salem has now dropped four in a row to fall into second place in the Carolina League Southern Division, one game behind the Winston-Salem Dash.

With the proceeding even at one through eight innings, the Keys used back-to-back singles from Billy Rowell and LJ Hoes to set the table in the ninth. After a sacrifice bunt from Jacob Julius moved the two baserunners to second and third, Salem brought the infield in. Buck Britton smacked a hard ground ball near shortstop Ryan Dent, who fumbled the pick-up and threw wildly to first, allowing both runners to score and give Frederick a 3-1 edge. Britton advanced to second on the throwing error and scored when Alex Hassan bobbled Bobby Stevens' single to right field a batter later.

Trailing 4-1 into the bottom of the ninth, Salem went 1-2-3 against Frederick closer Brandon Cooney, who picked up his sixth save in the Keys triumph. Red Sox third-baseman Will Middlebrooks grounded out to end the game, culminating his 0-4 night to snap his hitting streak at 13 consecutive games.

Salem registered two of its three base hits in the first inning. Peter Hissey opened the ballgame offensively with a double down the left field line, moved to third on an infield single by Oscar Tejeda, and scored on Ryan Lavarnway's RBI fielder's choice to shortstop. Salem's only hit after the first was a single from Lavarnway to lead off the seventh, but a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Tim Federowicz erased that runner in a hurry.

Frederick scored its first run after Salem starter Brock Huntzinger walked the leadoff man he faced in the fourth inning. Ronnie Welty earned the free pass and scored two batters later on LJ Hoes' double to the right-center field gap. It was the only run allowed by Huntzinger, who delivered his second consecutive quality start but received a no-decision. Huntzinger tossed six innings, allowing just the one run on three hits, while walking four and striking out two.

Keys starter Ryan O'Shea also received a no-decision, allowing one run on two hits in five innings. Oliver Drake tossed a pair of scoreless frames for Frederick, and Jose Diaz picked up his first victory with a clean bottom of the eighth. Salem southpaw Will Latimer was tagged with the loss, yielding three runs (two earned) in the ninth. Latimer threw two scoreless innings in relief before surrendering the deciding tallies in the ninth.

The Sox and Keys return to the diamond at Lewis-Gale Field on Wednesday evening for game three of the four-game set. The contest will pit a pair of lefthanders, Fabian Williamson for Salem and Nathan Nery for Frederick. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
