Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg evened up their four-game series with Wilmington as they held on for a 9-8 victory at Frawley Stadium on Tuesday night. Scott Carroll matched his season-high with seven innings of work, allowing just one unearned run and two hits.
Wilmington would plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning with the aid of a Lynchburg error. Adrian Ortiz got a board with an infield single and scored on a throwing error by Carlos Mendez to give the Blue Rocks a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg would tie the contest at a run a piece in the second inning on an RBI ground out by Alex Buchholz. In the fourth the Hillcats took the lead on the seventh home run of the season from their catcher Devin Mesoraco. It stayed 2-1 until the sixth inning when the Cats would open things up. Mesoraco hit a two-run triple to plate a pair and he later scored on interference by Wilmington's catcher to make it 5-1 Lynchburg.
The Hillcats tacked on three more runs to their lead in the seventh inning to take an 8-1 lead. Mesoraco singled in another run in the frame to become the first Hillcat this season to drive-in four runs in a game. Buchholz would hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, his first of the season, to up the advantage to 9-1.
The Blue Rocks plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull within five at 9-4. Rey Navarro and Eric Hosmer both singled in a run in the frame.
The Rocks kept fighting in the ninth inning as they would plated four more runs and get the tying and winning runs aboard. Jamie Romak, J.D. Alfaro and Eric Hosmer all singled home runs in the frame. But Nick Christiani, the third pitcher of the inning for Lynchburg, retired Jamar Walton with the bases loaded to end the game and to earn his first save as a Hillcat.
Carroll got the victory for Lynchburg (15-17) and starter Tim Melville (1-5) took the loss for Wilmington (12-20). Game three of the four-game series takes place at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium. Right-hander Curtis Partch (1-2, 3.96) will get the nod for the Hillcats opposite lefty Ivor Hodgson (2-2, 6.00) for the Blue Rocks.
