Marquis Rehab Ends in P-Nats Loss Tuesday
May 11, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
Jason Marquis surrendered three earned runs on six hits in his rehab assignment Tuesday at Pfitzner Stadium. The Potomac Nationals fell 8-5 to the Winston-Salem Dash.
The Washington Nationals' right-hander threw 54 pitches, 36 for strikes, in 3 2/3 innings. It was Marquis' first rehab assignment since going onto the disabled list in April with bone chips in his elbow.
The Dash showed the crowd The Pfitz why they are one of the most productive offenses in Minor League Baseball. Winston-Salem hammered out 17 hits, scattering runs in the second, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings. Six of those hits and three earned runs came off Marquis. Brad Peacock surrendered five earned runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings in a piggyback start.
Peacock was charges with the loss, his fourth of the season. The right-hander also recorded six strikeouts to just one walk.
After Marquis stranded one runner on one hit in the top of the first, the P-Nats jumped out to an early lead. Dash starter Nathan Jones walked Boomer Whiting and Steve Lombardozzi to start the bottom of the first. Whiting advanced to third as Lombardozzi was caught stealing second, then scored on a ground-out by Derek Norris. Michael Burgess followed with a single, then Bill Rhinehart drove the first pitch he saw over the wall in center field to put Potomac up 3-0.
But the lead was short-lived. Winston-Salem promptly answered with three runs of their own in the second inning. But the P-Nats retook the lead in the third.
Lombardozzi walked to lead off the frame and scored on a Michael Burgess double to right.
Again, it didn't last. Winston-Salem tied it up at 4-4 in the fifth. Brandon Short hit a leadoff single, moved to third on a Jon Gilmore single, and finally scored on a wild pitch by Peacock.
The Dash struck again in the sixth, taking a two-run lead on RBI singles by Short and Eduardo Escobar.
Potomac returned a run in the bottom of the frame as Jose Lozada drove in Tim Pahuta from second on a single through the hole at second base. The run wrapped up the scoring for the P-Nats.
Winston-Salem went on to tack on runs in the eighth and ninth innings in secure the 8-5 win.
The P-Nats and Dash face off again Wednesday in Game Three of the four-game series. Left-hander Charlie Leesman will lead Winston-Salem and try to take a third straight from Potomac, which will start righty Robinson Fabian. First pitch is set for 7:03 p.m.
Wednesday nights at Pfitzner Stadium means Belly Buster Night. Just $15 covers admission to the game and all-you-can-eat Moe's Southwest Grill, Uno Chicago Grill and Hard Times Cafe!
