Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Winston-Salem, NC (May 9, 2010) - The Red Sox put the potential tying run on third base twice in the final three innings, but the ultimate clutch hit eluded Salem as the Dash prevailed 4-3 in Sunday's series finale at BB&T Ballpark. The setback gives Salem back-to-back losses for only the second time this season and drops the Sox to 21-9, one game better than the Dash, who improved to 20-10 by taking two out of three on the weekend.
After a 16-13 slugfest on Saturday night, the Sunday line score consisted of nothing but candlepins and goose eggs as neither team scored multiple runs in an inning. Salem scored the first run and outhit Winston (7-6) for the first time in the series, yet uncharacteristically went 0-15 with runners in scoring position.
Salem led 2-0 after scoring a run in the first and another in the second, but the Sox offense was quieted through the remainder of Winston starter Stephen Sauer's outing. Sauer tossed six innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) on six hits to earn his second victory of the season. Meanwhile, the Dash recorded single tallies in the second, third, fifth, and sixth. Winston third-baseman Jon Gilmore was the only player in the game to finish with multiple hits and multiple RBI, going 2-4 with two RBI.
Santos Rodriguez replaced Sauer in the seventh with Winston leading 4-2, but walked four of the six Salem batters he faced to force in a run and make it 4-3. With two outs and the bases loaded, Dan Remanowsky entered and struck out Alex Hassan to escape the jam and preserve the one-run lead for the Dash.
In the ninth, Remanowsky surrendered a lead-off double to Tim Federowicz, and the pinch-runner Mitch Dening moved to third base on a grounder from Anthony Rizzo. But Will Middlebrooks struck out and Oscar Tejeda grounded to second to end the game, stranding Salem's 11th runner of the afternoon.
Salem starter Alex Wilson suffered the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings. In relief, Michael Lee walked the first man he faced and yielded an RBI double to the second, but proceeded to retire the next nine to keep the Sox within a run.
In the loss, Middlebrooks extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a first inning single. On the flipside, Dash leadoff hitter Brandon Short went 0-4, putting an end to his remarkable streak of 26 consecutive games with a hit, the second-longest in Winston-Salem baseball history.
The Red Sox return home for a matchup of division leaders, as Salem hosts Frederick for four games beginning Monday night at 7:05. Salem sends Stolmy Pimentel to the mound for the series opener against Keys' southpaw Rick Zagone.
