Struck Throws Rain Shortened No-Hitter Friday

April 30, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL) Peoria Chiefs

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs' Nick Struck threw the seventh no-hitter in team history to defeat the Clinton LumberKings, 4-0 in a game shortened by rain to five innings Friday evening and improve the Chiefs to 14-8 on the season. The win makes the Chiefs a perfect 10-0 at home on the season, the best start for any Chiefs team since O'Brien Field opened in 2002. The game ended in the fifth after a torrential downpour and high winds struck O'Brien Field. The Chiefs scored first off starter Erasmo Ramirez in the bottom of the third inning. Jonathan Mota led off with a single and advanced to second on a Richard Jones base hit. A Jose Valdez sacrifice bunt put runners in scoring position and an infield single from Logan Watkins gave the Chiefs the 1-0 lead. Peoria added to the lead in the fourth with rain looming on the horizon. Greg Rohan hit a lead-off home run to make the score 2-0 Chiefs. Mota singled later in the inning and scored on Jones' opposite field home run to give the Chiefs a 4-0 lead. Nick Struck took a no-hitter into the fifth inning three outs from reaching the minimum innings required for the game to be official. Struck got the first two batters out and Kalian Sams came to the plate. Sams fouled off a pair of pitches with two strikes before grounding out to shortstop Hak-Ju Lee. Minutes later it started raining and both teams evacuated the field. The umpires called the game an hour and two minutes later. Nick Struck (2-2) pitched a complete game no-hitter for the Chiefs. He threw five innings without allowing a hit, walked one batter, and set a career-high with five strikeouts. He faced the minimum 15 batters over five batters, picking off James Jones after walking him in the second inning.
