Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA - With the players donning Tuxedo jerseys and the fans sporting Red Sox Tuxedo t-shirts, Ryan Lavarnway pounded three more hits and Salem took down Myrtle Beach 7-4 on Saturday evening at Lewis-Gale Field. The Red Sox utilized 11 singles and one double to plate runs in three different innings as two pitchers combined to limit the Pelicans to just two earned runs over nine. The victory gives Salem its second three-game winning streak of the season and improves its Carolina League-best mark to 7-2.
One night after scoring 13 runs in the first five innings, the offense once again arrived early against Myrtle Beach pitching. Salem scored three times in the first against J.J. Hoover, with Lavarnway and Oscar Tejeda contributing RBI singles. Lavarnway finished with three singles and a walk in four at-bats, raising his already sterling average to .471.
The Pelicans battled back from the 3-0 deficit, getting one on a solo homer from Gerry Rodriguez in the second and two more on three hits and an error in the fifth. Jesus Sucre and Gerardo Avila scored to knot the score at three, but the tie seemingly reawakened the Salem offense.
In the fifth, the first two runners reached as Lavarnway singled and Will Middlebrooks doubled. With two in scoring position, rightfielder Drew Hedman belted a two-run single up the middle to regain the lead for Salem. Though the Pelicans would nab an unearned tally off Salem reliever Jeremy Kehrt in the sixth, the advantage belonged to the Sox for the rest of the night.
Thanks to two errors on Myrtle Beach in the bottom of the sixth, Salem added a pair to their lead after singles from Rizzo and Lavarnway were followed by a wild pitch and the two miscues. Rizzo scored from third on the wild pitch that was exacerbated when Sucre tossed the recovered pitch wildly to the pitcher covering who was covering home, allowing Lavarnway to scamper from first to third. A couple pitches later, Middlebrooks' grounder to third was thrown errantly to first by Shayne Moody, scoring Lavarnway to make it 7-4.
Alex Wilson earned the victory for the Red Sox, tossing five innings and permitting four hits, three runs (two earned), and compiling four strikeouts. In relief, Kehrt threw the final four innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits. Kehrt picked up his second save for Salem.
With their third straight series victory already in hand, the Red Sox now seek their first sweep of the season when they face Myrtle Beach in the finale on Sunday afternoon at 4:05. Salem's Opening Day starter Stolmy Pimentel is set for his third outing of the season, and he will be opposed by lefthander Jose Ortegano for the Pelicans.
