Greenville Drive News Release
Lexington, KY - The offense was on display for both the Drive and Lexington Legends at Applebee's Park, which meant neither teams' pitching was too effective. Beginning their first road trip of the season, Greenville plated eight runs.
However, they were outdone by the hometown Legends who scored 12 runs for the victory in a rain-shortened game that lasted six and a half innings.
Lexington put up a four spot in the bottom of the first, as Ramon Mendez surrendered a grand slam to Kody Hinze. But the Drive quickly answered for five runs in their next at bat.
Reymond Fuentes collected the first of the Drive's two doubles in the top of the second, scoring Michael Almanzar. Making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list, Ronald Bermudez added an RBI-single before Wilfredo Pichardo's two-run double tied the game. Jeremy Hazelbaker put Greenville up a run with a run-scoring groundout.
An inning later the Drive padded their lead with a pair of runs without recording a hit. After Dan Butler was hit by a pitch and Fuentes drew a walk, a throwing error by Legends' third baseman Jonathan Meyer on Bermudez's batted ball allowed both runners to score.
But a three-run lead wasn't enough for the Drive as Lexington regained a lead they wouldn't relinquish in the bottom of the third. Hinze brought the Legends within a run with his second homer of the game, a two-run shot which brought an end to Mendez's evening.
Pedro Perez (0-1) didn't fare any better out of the bullpen, as he was tagged for four hits and three runs in the inning. Lexington pulled away with two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
The Drive's final run came in the top of the seventh when Luis Segovia led off with a solo homer before a steady rain sent the game into a delay.
Following a thirty-six minute drenching, the umpiring crew of Tim Rosso, Shea Gipson, and Shane Livensparger decided to call the game early.
The Drive and Legends continue their three-game series on Saturday with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from Applebee's Park. Greenville will send right-hander Ryan Pressly (0-0, 6.00 ERA) to the hill, while Lexington counters with right-hander Brandt Walker (1-0, 1.80 ERA).
Following their eight-game road trip, which also includes a stop in Charleston, WV, the Drive return home to Fluor Field on Saturday, April 24th. Before the Drive return home there will be a collegiate baseball game at their home field on Thursday, April 22nd featuring Furman and Presbyterian College, and a high school contest on Friday, April 23rd between Wren and Easley.
