Dillon has goal and assist in 6-3 loss to Portland

Kent - The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 6-3 on Saturday night at ShoWare Center in Kent.

Seattle (14-31-5-4) took a 1-0 lead at 4:55 of the first period on a goal by Brenden Dillon. Brenden Silvester took a hit to make a play by banking the puck off the glass along the right boards just inside the Seattle blue line. Chance Lund got to the puck in neutral zone and headed up ice. Dillon jumped into the rush to create a two-on-one. Lund put a hard snap shot on goal from the right circle with Dillon coming hard down the slot. Portland goalie Mac Carruth stopped Lunds shot but the rebound lay in the crease. Dillon poked the loose puck under Carruth for his second goal of the year.

Portland (34-20-2-1) tied the game at 17:34 of the first on a power-play goal by Troy Rutkowski. Taylor Aronson and Ryan Johansen had assists on the goal. The T-Birds took the lead back at 19:19 of the first on a power-play goal by Charles Wells. Prab Rai worked the puck up the boards from the right corner. Rai made a crisp cross-ice pass to Wells in the left circle. Wells one timed Rais pass and beat Carruth high for his 14th goal of the year.

Seattle outshot Portland 11-10 in the first period.

The Winterhawks tied the game 2-2 at 6:24 of the second period on a goal by Luke Walker. Chris Francis and Ty Rattie had the assists.

Stefan Schneider gave the Winterhawks a 3-2 lead at 8:33 of the second with his 10th goal of the year. Seth Swenson and Tyler Wotherspoon had the assists.

Portland took a 4-2 lead at 9:47 of the second on a goal by Oliver Gabriel. Riley Boychuk and Joe Morrow had assists on the goal.

The Winterhawks went in front 5-2 at 15:25 of the second on a goal by Nino Niederreiter. Brad Ross had the only assist on the goal.

Portland led in total shots, 26-19, after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 16-8 in the second period.

Michael Salmon started the third period in net for the T- Birds. Calvin Pickard made 21 saves on 26 shots in 40 minutes of action. Pickard was credited with the loss and his record is now 12-26-5-4.

Seattle got on the board in the third period at 6:17 when Luke Lockhart scored his fifth goal of the year. Dillon carried the puck down the right side and into the Portland zone. At the goal line Dillon backhanded the puck to Lockhart in the high slot. Lockhart cradled the puck and then snapped the puck past Carruth over the blocker.

Portlands Taylor Peters scored an empty-net goal at 18:36 of the third period to give Portland a 6-3 lead.

Salmon stopped all 8 shots he faced.

Portland goalie Mac Carruth (7-7-1-0) made 24 saves on 27 shots to earn the victory.

The T-Birds next game is Tuesday, February 9, against the Tri-City Americans at 7:05 at Toyota Center. They are back home on Friday, February 12, to face the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7:35 at ShoWare Center.

The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
