Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO, IL (Feb. 3, 2010) - The Chicago Fire Soccer Club takes the field for the second time today at MAX - McCook Athletic & Exposition, the club's indoor training facility, as they prepare for the 2010 MLS season. Today from 9:30-11:00 AM all Fire coaches and players will be made available to the media at MAX - McCook Athletic & Exposition (4750 S. Vernon Avenue, McCook, IL).
On Monday, the club held its first day of training camp at TOYOTA PARK. Twenty Seven contracted players and trialists received physicals and took part in fitness testing including new faces such as, former Fulham forward and Brian McBride teammate, Collins John, Fire first round draft pick, midfielder Corben Bone and Salvadoran national team midfielder Julio Martinez. The remaining four trialists and newly signed Polish defender Krzysztof Krol, will meet the team in Phoenix, AZ on Thursday, Feb. 4, for two weeks of training from Feb. 4-18 at Arizona State University. The team will later travel to Guadalajara, Mexico, Jackson, MS., and New Orleans, LA., for the remainder of spring training.
Chicago Fire manager Carlos De los Cobos has added Alvaro Briones to his coaching staff as the Fire's fitness coach. From 2006-09, Briones served as an assistant coach under de los Cobos for the El Salvador men's national team. Briones, a product of Iquique, Chile received his coaching license from the Universidad de Chile in Santiago, Chile and has coached for over 30 years on the club and national team level. Briones has spent most of his career coaching within the Primera Division in Mexico, including stints with Club America, Atlas, Tecos, Toluca, Puebla, Tigres, Jaguares, Santos Laguna and Monterey, among others. He has also coached in the Primera División de F=FAtbol Profesional in El Salvador with club C.D. FAS. As the Fire's fitness coach, Briones will be charged with optimizing player's physical fitness, while offering tactical support and endurance training.
Additional changes to team staff include Mike Matkovich stepping into the first assistant role, which was previously held by Mike Jeffries, who is no longer with the club. The Fire will not renew the contract for goalkeeping coach Daryl Shore. The club will evaluate various candidates to fill the position throughout the preseason. Ron Stern, Bo Leonard, Matt Zalewski and Charles Raycroft all remain with the Fire in their current positions.
