Albany Devils News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lowell Devils couldn't catch the Worcester Sharks in a 3-2 loss on Sunday afternoon at the DCU Center. Devils goaltender Mike McKenna suffered the loss despite make 38 saves in the match. Michael Swift led Lowell's offense with two assists.

Worcester's Logan Couture got the game's first goal just 1:39 into the second when he banked a centering pass off the leg pad of McKenna and into the net. The goal was Couture's tenth point in four games versus Lowell this season.

Stephen Gionta had a chance to even the score at 7:58 of the period with a penalty shot, but fired the wrist shot just wide of the top corner.

The Sharks pushed their lead to 2-0 at 14:23 when Andrew Desjardins pounced on the rebound from Dan DaSilva's slap shot from the near circle.

Despite being outshot 17-6 in the second frame, the Devils found themselves within one thanks to their third power play of the contest. With time expiring on the advantage, Matt Halischuk's tuck shot was denied by Alex Stalock, but Ben Walter crashed toward the crease to deposit his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Worcester would go back up by two at 6:58 of the third as Brandon Mashinter backhanded the eventual game-winner past a sprawled McKenna after the Lowell goalie got a piece of Joe Callahan's point shot.

Nick Palmieri also notched his 11th of the year to pull the Devils back within a goal with 8:50 remaining in regulation, but the Sharks would fend off the Lowell rally.

The Lowell Devils wrap up the calendar year with a New Years Eve game versus the Manchester Monarchs on Thursday, December 31 at 7:00PM.
