Last Game

Earthquakes 2, D.C. United 1; Sept. 27, 2009; RFK Stadium; Washington, D.C.

The San Jose Earthquakes ended a 20-match road winless streak, defeating D.C. United 2-1 on second half goals by Ramon Sanchez and Ryan Johnson. Johnson was dangerous the entire match for San Jose, additionally scoring two goals that were taken away on refereeing decisions before netting the game-winner in the 73rd minute. Jaime Moreno put United into the lead in the 26th minute, but Earthquakes midfielder Ramon Sanchez stroked home a perfectly taken free kick just before the hour mark for the equalizer. As the play tilted significantly toward the Quakes end of the park, the dam finally broke in the 26th minute as Moreno stepped in front of Jason Hernandez near the top left corner of the 6-yard box, turned, and powered a left-footed shot through Weber to give United a 1-0 lead. A simple ball from Ben Olsen out of midfield set Chris Pontius free on the left flank. The rookie played a low cross into Moreno, who had darted to the spot with a slashing run from the top of the penalty area. A marginal offside call kept the Quakes from equalizing just a minute before the halftime whistle when Johnson's sharp-angle header off a perfectly floated Chris Leitch cross from a the right flank found the back of the net. Johnson slipped behind and out-jumped two United defenders to knock it home but the referee's assistant deemed him to have been a step offside. As the rain continued to come down, a Johnson shot found the back of the net again in the 49th minute. However, referee Baldomero Toledo had blown the play dead prior to the ball spinning across the line so goalkeeper Josh Wicks could be attended to for a serious shoulder injury. Wicks wandered well out of his net to contest an Elliott corner kick, and in doing so his left arm got caught under Johnson's body, dislocating his left shoulder in the process. As Wicks crumbled to the turf in obvious pain, Johnson gathered the rebound and banged a shot that deflected high off a United defender before bouncing into the goal but not before the play was blown down by the rightfully cautious Toledo. Wicks was replaced by Milos Kocic. With Kocic's feet still cold, the Quakes finally got one that counted on a perfectly bent free kick from Sanchez to equalize at 1-1 in the 58th minute. Julius James took down Johnson in a prime location some 26 yards from goal straight on and the Salvadoran midfielder made them pay, curving the left footer over the wall and away from the flat-footed Kocic. Johnson's hard work was finally fulfilled and Yallop's decision on Alvarez proved fruitful as the two contributed to the Quakes go-ahead goal in the in the 73rd minute. Alvarez collected a poor United clearing attempt and though stumbling for a fleeting second, got off a decent left-footed shot. The ball was deflected onto the crossbar by United defender Clyde Simms, with Kocic out to cut down the angle. Alvarez's shot caromed directly to Johnson on the left side some 11 yards from the goal, who headed it into the vacated net for his ninth goal of the season to make the score 2-1. Corrales perhaps saved the game for the Quakes in the 82nd minute, clearing a Pontius bicycle kick off the line from 10 yards out.

Last Game vs. New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls 4, Earthquakes 1; May. 8, 2009; Giants Stadium; East Rutherford, NJ.

The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the New York Red Bulls 4-1 at Giants Stadium. Ryan Johnson scored the only goal for San Jose. Three goals down after just 22 minutes, the visitors were unable to contain the free-scoring New Yorkers, who had scored just five goals total in their previous eight games of the season. The Earthquakes got off to the worst possible start when Jorge Rojas put the Red Bulls into the lead after just seven minutes. The Venezuelan midfielder lofted a free kick into the penalty area from near the right-hand touchline. San Jose 'keeper Joe Cannon was caught flat-footed by a late run into the area by New York defender Kevin Goldthwaite, and the ball bounced into the back of the net. If San Jose head coach Frank Yallop hoped that the goal would serve as a wakeup call for his team, he was to be sorely disappointed, and the Quakes were two goals down just six minutes later. Rojas was again the beneficiary of lax defending when his teammate Macoumba Kandji flicked on a corner from Red Bulls defender Carlos Johnson in the right corner. Making a late run to the far post, Rojas was left completely unmarked, easily placing a header past the helpless Cannon. With the home side attacking in waves, Juan Pablo Angel put the Red Bulls into a commanding lead after just 22 minutes. Kandji was again at the heart of the action, picking up a great ball on the right flank from Albert Celades. The forward had plenty of time to pick out his strike partner Angel with a low cross. The Colombian tapped the ball into the net from close range for his third goal of the season. Things went from bad to worse just five minutes from halftime, however, when Kandji caught Kelly Gray in possession 35 yards from goal and calmly strode forward before placing the ball past Cannon. With the Red Bulls seemingly scoring at will, Ryan Johnson gave the Earthquakes an opening on the stroke of halftime. This time it was the Red Bulls' turn to be caught napping, and they failed to react to a cross into their penalty area. Earthquakes captain Ramiro Corrales, however, kept his eye on the ball, and cushioned a header across the six-yard box, where the unmarked Johnson headed the ball past Cepero. The goal was Johnson's third of the season and the assist was Corrales' first. San Jose almost pulled another goal back with just over 10 minutes left, only for Red Bulls defender Alfredo Pacheco to head Bobby Convey's goalbound shot off the line.
