Robert Bono pitched a complete-game four-hitter and the Lexington Legends completed their 2009 season with a 5-0 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods Sunday in Bowling Green. The victory gave the Legends a four-game sweep in the final series of the season.
The Legends took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Eric Suttle led off with a single. After Jeff Hulett struck out, Freddie Hernandez singled on a hit-and-run play to advance Suttle to third, from where he scored on an infield out by Marques Williams.
Lexington added a run in the seventh on a single by Hulett and a double by Williams, and then scored three more in the ninth. Eric Suttle led off with his first home run of the year to make the score 3-0. Hulett followed with a triple. He scored on a double by Hernandez, and Hernandez came home on Chris Jackson's single to give Lexington a 5-0 lead.
The Hot Rods scored their only run in the bottom of the ninth on a double by Jason Tweedy and a single by Tim Beckham.
Bono, who struck out four and didn't walk a batter, did not allow a baserunner until Mike Sheridan singled with two outs in the fifth inning. It was Bono's third complete game of the year. He was second in the South Atlantic League in that category behind Kyle Nicholson of Augusta, who had four.
Michael Jarman (4-6) was the starting and losing pitcher for Bowling Green.
The Legends open the 2010 season April 8 in Charleston, South Carolina and will play their home opener April 16 at Applebee's Park against the Greenville Drive.
