Suns Lose Season Finale to Captains

September 7, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD -- Needing a victory in their final game of the 2009 season to win three consecutive series for the first time all year, the Hagerstown Suns (25-42) fell short against the Lake County Captains (40-30) at Municipal Stadium on Monday afternoon, never recovering from three Captains runs in the fourth inning of a 4-2 loss.

The Suns jumped ahead early on a run-scoring groundout by designated hitter Tyler Moore in the bottom of the first inning, which plated second baseman Steve Lombardozzi for a 1-0 lead. It was the 87th RBI of the season for Moore, pulling him into a second-place tie on the South Atlantic League leaderboard. Lombardozzi scored twice in the game to finish the season with 90 runs, also good for a runner-up finish in the SAL.

Hagerstown starter A.J. Morris (0-4) made the run hold up through three innings, but in the fourth Delvi Cid picked up the first hit of the game for the Captains with a bunt single down the third-base line, starting the game's defining rally. After Morris walked Karexon Sanchez, Cid came around to tie the game when Suns' centerfielder Chris Curran made an errant throw home on a Bo Greenwell double.

John Allman followed with a single up the middle to score Sanchez, but Curran got a dose of redemption by throwing out Greenwell at the plate, aided by some perfect plate-blocking from catcher Travis Reagan. Two batters later, a Roberto Perez single scored Allman, before Suns left fielder Valerio Heredia could end the threat by throwing out Jeremie Tice as he tried to take an extra base on the play. Despite two outfield assists in the inning, Hagerstown emerged trailing 3-1.

Lake County starter Alexander Morales (1-0) settled in to hold the Suns scoreless over his final five innings of work, and the Captains added to their lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded.

Hagerstown matched that run in the bottom of the frame, as right fielder J.R. Higley launched a one-out double off the centerfield wall to plate Lombardozzi, who was hit by a pitch. Trailing 4-2, the Suns put runners at the corners with two outs, but third baseman Steven Souza struck out looking to end the threat.

Matt Langwell pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the year, dropping Hagerstown's overall record for the season to 56-78.

Lombardozzi, Higley and shortstop Jose Lozada each had two-hit games for the Suns. Lozada's leadoff single in the fifth inning was his first hit since June 19, following a stint of over two months on the disabled list. Higley hit .300 in 11 games with Hagerstown following a late call-up from Short-Season Vermont, while Lombardozzi finished the year at .296, just one point off Moore's team-best mark of .297.

All-Star catcher Derek Norris, who did not appear in Hagerstown's final three games, wrapped up the year with a .286 batting average, a SAL-best .413 on-base percentage, and 23 home runs, second most in the league. Robby Jacobsen, who pinch-ran in the eighth inning on Monday, finished his third year as a Sun with a .285 batting average, having batted in all nine spots in the order at least one this season.

The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
