Frias, Suns Fall Short In Pitcher's Duel

Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD -- The Lake County Captains (39-30) and their stingy pitching staff denied All-Star right-hander Marcos Frias his tenth win of the season on Sunday night, sending the Hagerstown Suns (25-41) to a 2-1 loss, just their third in ten games.
Frias (9-5) allowed only one earned run over six innings, finishing a stellar 2009 season with an earned-run average of 2.91, eight-best in the South Atlantic League. Frias also struck out five Captains to raise his season total 112 and pass teammate Paul Demny for the team lead.
Lake County starter T.J. House (6-11) outdueled Frias, however, shutting down Hagerstown over six frames while his teammates built a 2-0 lead. Karexon Sanchez doubled and scored in the top of the third inning to open the scoring, and the Captains added an unearned run in the sixth. With runners on first and second and one out, Frias appeared to be out of the inning when John Allman grounded a ball right back to the mound. But after Frias threw to second to start the double play, shortstop Steven Souza's throw to first skipped into foul territory, allowing Bo Greenwell to score from second for a 2-0 Lake County lead.
Hagerstown's inability to counter the Captains' runs had much to do with blunders on the basepaths. In the first inning, the Suns singled twice and drew a walk, but a pickoff play caught Souza leading too far off second, and first baseman Tyler Moore was thrown out advancing too casually to second on a pitch that bounced away from Lake County catcher Roberto Perez.
Another Hagerstown threat ended prematurely in the fifth, when third baseman James Keithley tried to score from second on an infield single. Left fielder Robby Jacobsen's grounder up the middle with two outs was stabbed by a diving Sanchez, who had no chance at retiring Jacobsen, but popped up and fired a throw home to beat the overly-aggressive Keithley with ease.
It took a sloppy inning by the Captains for the Suns to finally break through in the seventh, as first baseman Brett Newsome reached on a single off reliever Jose Urena's glove, advanced to third on a throwing error by Lake County shortstop Dan DeGeorge, and scored on a wild pitch.
Newsome was the only Sun with two hits on the day, going two-for-four to keep his batting average at .500 through three games with Hagerstown.
After Urena kept the Suns off the board in the eighth, however, Newsome struck out to end the game as Kaimi Mead earned his first save of the year with a perfect ninth.
Lake County's win evened the five-game series with Hagerstown at two games apiece. The Suns and Captains will wrap up the series -- and the 2009 season -- with a 2:05 p.m. game on Monday, with gates opening at Municipal Stadium at 1:05 p.m. With a victory, the Suns would win their third straight series -- a feat they have not accomplished all year.
