Legends win in 12 innings over Greenville, 4-3

Eric Suttle's walk-off double in the twelfth inning gave the Lexington Legends a 4-3 win over the Greenville Drive at Applebee's Park Sunday afternoon. The Legends had tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning on Brian Pellegrini's 24th home run of the season.

Suttle's winning hit came with two outs. Russell Dixon had walked with one out, and after Reinaldo Pestana lined to right for the second out, Jay Austin singled, moving Dixon to second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Suttle drilled a ball over the head of center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker to end the game.

Greenville built an early 2-0 lead. The Drive scored a run in the first inning on singles by Pete Hissey and Casey Kelly, a fly ball by Ryan Lavarnway and an RBI base hit by Will Middlebrooks In the second inning, Greenville's Mike Thomas hit his second home run of the year over the bleachers in left field.

The Legends scored in the bottom of the third. Brandon Wikoff's single hit drove in Pestana, who had reached base on a walk, Pestana moved to second on Austin's single and to third on a sacrifice by Suttle before scoring on Wikoff's hit to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Drive made it 3-1 in the fourth when Ty Weeden led off with a triple and scored on a two-out single by Hissey.

The Legends again cut the lead to one in the seventh. Dixon singled, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on Pestana's fly ball to right. He scored when Austin grounded out to second.

Pellegrini's game-tying solo shot came with one out in the eighth, and moved him into the South Atlantic League lead in home runs, one ahead of Derek Norris of Hagerstown, which was playing a doubleheader at Delmarva.

Matt Nevarez pitched the last two innings in relief and got the win. He's now 2-4 for the season, 1-0 as a Legend. Nevarez, who spent most of the season with Hickory of the South Atlantic League, was acquired by the Houston organization in a trade with Texas August 18. Felix Ventura (2-7) was the losing pitcher. Suttle got the winning hit off Will Latimer, who replaced Ventura with one out and Dixon at first in the 12th.

The Legends will play Greenville at Applebee's Park Monday night at 7:05 p.m. in Lexington's final home game of the 2009 season.
