Stolmy Pimentel Earns 10th Win as Drive Blank Legends, 9-0

August 29, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Lexington, KY - It seemed like an eternity since Stolmy Pimentel earned a victory - 44 days to be exact since he recorded his ninth win of the season. But on Saturday in Lexington, Kentucky the 19-year-old Dominican tossed 5.0 scoreless frames, allowing just two singles, as the Drive (68-61, 29-32) shutout the Legends (61-70, 25-36), 9-0.

With the victory, Pimentel (10-7) joins southpaw Fabian Williamson with double-digit win totals on the year. The duo is the first hurlers in franchise history to win at least 10 games in a season.

Despite issuing four walks during his outing, Pimentel was the beneficiary of a strong defensive effort behind him. The Drive turned two of their three double plays through the first five innings, and Pimentel also struckout four.

Although Pimentel and a pair of relievers, Mitch Herold and Kyle Rutter, secured Greenville's 11th shutout of the season, the offense made sure that they would not be outdone, especially Ryan Larnway.

The catcher inched closer to setting a pair of Drive records as he finished with a 3-for-4 effort, and knocking in four runs. His third inning double was his 34th of the year, and three innings later he belted his 20th homer of the year - a three-run shot. Lavarnway needs just one of each to tie the franchise highs.

It didn't the Drive long to dispose of Legends' starter Kyle Greenwalt (8-13), who lasted just three-plus innings. Following a leadoff double by Pete Hissey, Lavarnway plated the leftfielder with a one-out single. In the third inning Greenville sent eight batters to the plate, tallying four hits as Will Middlebrooks, Kade Keowen, and Ty Weeden each knocked in a run.

Hissey's second double of the night, one that plated Oscar Tejeda in the top of the fourth, gave the Drive a five-run advantage and sent Greenwalt to the showers early. But Greenville made life miserable for reliever Kirkland Rivers as well when Lavarnway hit his three-run shot in the sixth.

Greenville's bullpen picked up where Pimentel left off as Herold and Rutter limited the Legends to only three hits over the final four innings. Only two base runners even sniffed the possibility of scoring over that span by reach second base, but none advanced to third.

The Drive and Legends continue their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch set for 2:05 PM from Applebee's Park. Lefty Fabian Williamson (10-4, 2.30 ERA) will look to regain sole possession as Greenville's win leader as Lexington counters with right-hander Jordan Lyles (6-11, 3.23 ERA).

The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Tuesday, September 1st, when they begin the final homestand of the 2009 regular season. Tuesday is also Spartanburg Community Night at the ballpark...For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
