Allen, Campbell Lead Gnats To Win

August 29, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Third baseman Eric Campbell went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI while starter Kyle Allen fanned nine in 6.2 innings to help the Sand Gnats to a, 6-2, win over the Rome Braves on Saturday night at Grayson Stadium. Allen (8-6) set a season-high in strikeouts with nine while tying a season-high in innings pitched.

With a, 1-0, lead entering the fifth, the Sand Gnats exploded for five runs off reliever Michael Mehlich. Mehlich, who came in for first-round pick Mike Minor, had control problems as he walked Luis Alen and hit Jose Jimenez to load the bases after allowing an inning-opening single to Reyes.

Wilmer Flores struck for the second out of the inning but the control issues flared up again for Mehlich, who walked Satin to walk in a run. Sean Ratliff batted with the bases still loaded and two away and also drew a walk to plate Savannah's third run. Campbell delivered the knock-out blow with a bases-clearing double to put the Gnats up, 6-0.

The third baseman out of Norwich, Conn. also drove in Savannah's first run of the game in the first when he doubled in Satin. It is the first four-RBI game of the season for Campbell.

Allen, 19, did not allow a Rome hit in the game until Matt Kennelly singled with two down in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles by Adam Milligan and Luis Sumoza scored the only run of the game off Allen, who gave way to Brad Burns with two away. His nine wins tie him for the staff lead with Jeurys Familia and departed starter Chris Schwinden.

Nick Giarraputo's 10-game hitting streak came to a close Saturday night as the Southern California native went 0-for-4 at the plate. Allen's nine strikeouts give the Gnats starters 29 in the past three games after Armando Rodriguez whiffed nine on Thursday and Eric Beaulac set down 11 last night.

Sunday marks the final home game of the 2009 season and it will be a Kids Sunday presented by the Savannah Morning News, BIG 98.3 and The CW. Familia (9-6, 2.79) will make another bid for his 10th win when he takes the hill in the finale. For tickets and more information, visit www.sandgnats.com or call 912.351.9150.
