Aeros Swept in Doubleheader

BOWIE, MD - Akron was swept in a doubleheader for the first time since July of last season Wednesday night at Prince George's Stadium, losing 5-3 in game one and 5-2 in game two while missing a chance to secure a playoff berth. The Aeros (79-51) did see their magic number lowered to one to clinch a post-season spot with Erie's loss at Reading, while the magic number to claim the division title remained four over the Phillies.
Akron got off to a quick start in the opener, as Bowie starter Steve Johnson walked the bases loaded to start the game before surrendering a sacrifice fly to Beau Mills and an RBI infield single to Matt McBride as the Aeros took a 2-0 lead. The Baysox roared back in the bottom of the frame however, striking for four runs although three were unearned against Akron starter Jeanmar Gomez. Carlos Santana belted a solo home run in the top of the third to bring the Aeros within a run at 4-3, but Bowie added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to account for the final margin.
The Aeros also opened the scoring in the nightcap, as Carlos Rivero singled home McBride in the top of the second. The Baysox got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Steve Torrealba, and although Akron retook the lead in the third on Santana's RBI hit Bowie took command in the bottom of the frame. Miguel Abreu tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single, and with two down Aeros starter Connor Graham uncorked a wild pitch to plate the go-ahead run. Ambiorix Concepcion then delivered the back-breaker, grounding a two-run single back up the middle to give the Baysox some breathing room and finish the scoring.
Johnson (1-2) earned his first win for Bowie in the opener, while Gomez (10-4) suffered the loss for Akron. Eddie Gamboa (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings for the Sox in game two, while Graham dropped to 1-3. Santana did have a memorable night, as his walk in the first inning of game one gave him 83 on the season, breaking Ken Ramos' single-season record of 82 set in 1992. Santana is also up to 88 RBI this year, tying him with Tracy Sanders for fifth on the single-season list.
Akron will look for a split in this four-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., as Josh Tomlin (12-9, 4.40 ERA) takes the mound opposite Bowie's Ryohei Tanaka (4-2, 2.27 ERA).
