Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Kinston, NC (August 7, 2009) - The Indians scored nine unanswered runs in response to an early 1-0 deficit, blasting the Red Sox 9-1 on Friday evening at Grainger Stadium. With two in the third, four in the sixth, and three more in the ninth, the trio of multi-run frames were more than enough to dispatch the scuffling Salem offense that has only scored two runs in the last three games. Over the past 12 games, the Red Sox have only scored 28 runs, less than two and a half per contest.
Three different Indians finished with multiple RBI, including Ole Sheldon, whose two-run dinger in the sixth inning stretched the advantage to 5-1. Sheldon's homer knocked Salem starter Dave McKae out of the ballgame after five and a third innings. McKae had allowed only two runs through the first five, but allowed five runs on seven hits through his outing that sent another loss his way, his fifth of the season.
Tim Fedroff's two-run single in the third erased Salem's 1-0 lead and gave Kinston the edge they would not relinquish. Fedroff finished 2-4 with two RBI, while Lonnie Chisenhall also chipped in with two hits, including an RBI double, and two runs. Everyone in the Kinston lineup except Ron Rivas registered at least one hit.
Salem's only extra-base hit of the first two games of the series, a leadoff third inning double by Kris Negron, led to Salem's only run so far in the series. Jon Hee went 2-3 and singled in the third to tally the only RBI of the evening for the Sox. Chih-Hsien Chiang also finished with two hits, while Negron's double and David Mailman's single represented the rest of the minimal Red Sox offensive.
Kinston outhit Salem 12-6 and added three more runs off Jose Capellan in the eighth inning. Capellan walked the first two batters on eight pitches to shoot himself in the foot. A Cord Phelps single loaded the bases, and the Kinston runs scored on a sac fly from Rivas and a two-run single from Doug Pickens. The bases were loaded again with two outs when Josh Papelbon came on to induce an inning-ending grounder and minimize the damage by stranding the three inherited runners.
Bryce Stowell picked up the win in relief for Kinston, pitching three and two thirds scoreless and hitless innings for the Tribe. Mike McGuire threw well in starting duties, allowing one run on five hits over four a third. McGuire struck out a season-high six batters and received a no-decision.
Despite the excruciatingly rough stretch for Salem, they remain just a half-game behind Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division wild card race. The Red Sox and K-Tribe, winners of four straight, reunite on Saturday evening with Eammon Portice set to duel Scott Barnes at 7:00 from Grainger Stadium.
