Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg topped Myrtle Beach 7-1 in game two of their series on the Grand Strand. Jordy Mercer homered in the first inning in the Hillcats win. Game three is on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Myrtle Beach.

The Hillcats struck first when Mercer belted a solo home run off Myrtle Beach starter Brandon Beachy in the top of the first inning, putting Lynchburg in front 1-0.

Myrtle Beach evened the score with a run in the bottom of the second. Gerry Rodriguez hit a leadoff single and stole second base. After Cats starter Nate Adcock retired Jesus Sucre, Chris Shehan singled to put runners at the corners. Benji Johnson knocked in Rodriguez with an RBI single to make it a 1-1 contest.

In the top of the third inning the Cats regained the lead with a three-run frame. Eric Fryer's lead-off single in the inning was the only hit in the inning for Lynchburg as they were aided by two errors and a wild pitch by the Pelicans.

Another run came across for the Green & Gold in the fourth inning as a result of another mishap from the Myrtle Beach defense to make it 5-1. Fryer reached on the second error by third baseman Donell Linares and the third error in two innings by the Birds that allowed Alex Presley to score. Presley hit his Carolina League leading ninth triple of the season with two outs in the inning.

Two more runs got tacked on in the top of the eighth inning when Jared Keel lined his tenth homer of the season over the wall down the left field corner. Keel is the active leader on the Hillcats in long balls and this shot, his second in as many days, gave them a 7-1 advantage.

Nate Adcock (2-0) got the win for Lynchburg (16-25, 61-49), tossing five innings and only allowing one run in his first start with the Hillcats, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Beachy (2-2) took the loss for Myrtle Beach (19-21, 44-63).

With the series tied at a game a piece the two teams will do battle again on Saturday night at 7:05 at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach. The Cats will send left-hander Rudy Owens (0-0, 0.00) to the mound opposite fellow left-hander Richard Sullivan (2-9, 4.17) for the Birds.
